Starting a new book. I have wanted to read this for a while but I'm finally getting to it now. Reconstruction is a period of American history I did not learn about until I was an adult. #MakeGoodThePromises #Reconstruction

What can you do to build America into the society you dream it would be?
How do you participate in building an America that offers opportunity and voice to all? These are the question we ask at the end of our exhibition, #MakeGoodThePromises: Reconstruction and Its Legacies.
Our museum mourns the loss of author and activist Albert Woodfox, who spent more than 43 years in solitary confinement after being unjustly convicted of murder in 1972. His last prison-issued sweatshirt is on display in our exhibition #MakeGoodThePromises, which closes on 8/21.

How would you reconstruct America and help “make good the promises” of our Constitution, as Frederick Douglass once called the nation to do in an 1876 speech? This is the question we pose at the end of our exhibition, #MakeGoodThePromises: Reconstruction and Its Legacies.

@SmithsonianSec @TranscribeSI The Freedmen’s Bureau operated in 15 states throughout the South from 1865 to 1872. Through their interactions with the Freedmen’s Bureau, African Americans fought to secure the things they needed to live as free citizens, including land, family, education, safety, and justice.
