Notes from the Bay: At a social function today, a little girl I didn’t know came up to me while I was standing by the snack table. “Hello, nice to meet you! Would you like a snack?” I asked in my friendliest mom voice. She looked up at me with her big blue eyes and said, “I’m in kindergarten. I don’t remember preschool. My brother is in preschool. He cut his hair short, but he’s really a girl.” “Oh!” I said, completely blindsided. Here’s a rough approximation of what I imagine my face looked like at that moment: 🫪 “He cut his hair and wears some clothes, but he’s a girl!” she repeated. She was insistent, and I could tell she wanted a real response. But I was still at a loss for words. “Oh!” I managed again. “He wears different clothes, but he’s a girl!He goes to preschool. I’m in kindergarten.” She was practically stomping her feet now. I finally found my voice. “Well, you’re doing a good job noticing the truth. It doesn’t matter what clothes you wear or what happens to your hair,” I managed to say. She seemed satisfied, grabbed a cucumber and wandered off. And that was that. But I felt like screaming, “WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE, PEOPLE?!?” I couldn’t stop thinking about it all day. The whole abusive situation. In the end, the little girl wanted what we all want when deep in the gender trenches. We want someone to acknowledge reality and say, “I see it too.”
