Ten members of the clergy might be subject to disciplinary proceedings... but another 30 members of the clergy were named in the #MakinReport.
*40* members of the clergy.
40 Christians.
All with privilege, theology degrees, and faith in a Christian God.
And they walked on by.
So that's a total of 40 members of the clergy who did not do enough, if anything, to protect victims.
That's a lot of people. Stay away from the Church. They will place heavy burdens on people's backs but not lift a finger to help them.
Ten members of the clergy, including two bishops, could be subject to disciplinary proceedings in connection with the abuse perpetrated by John Smyth https://t.co/JSfPBqvfQO
Welby cannot simply be technically in charge while racking up all of those air miles flying around the world and being received by cheering crowds. He seems happy enough to accept the benefits for someone who is only technically in charge.

This is how to #apologise #CoE. Shame on #JustinWelby for making the story about him.The #MakinReport makes it clear there were many opportunities to stop the abuse. #GuideNyachuru died under #Smyths ‘care.’ #SayHisName https://t.co/CBNmxVqTpc
It kinda proves the point victims are making, doesn't it? As per the #MakinReport she did not follow up with the diocese or the Police, and seems to have dished off responsibility to other people. Very CofE. No concern or thought for the victims at all. Now, more excuses that insult our intelligence.
I'm absolutely sure that there are more revelations to come.
Forgiveness and trust are two different things; you might forgive but you don't trust.
When an abuser shows a relentless ability to be crafty about his behaviour, then you do not trust him because they do not deserve it. All social activities should cease, including funerals, due to their ability to cause trouble for others as well as inadequate supervision.

Well, if you want your children to stay away from paedophiles and getting sexually assaulted, getting them to attend services at the @ChurchofEngland is not a very good move. If @BorisJohnson hasn't noticed, the Church is in a spot over the #MakinReport and @thetimes@thetimes published an article by Baroness Jay to say that abuse still goes on in the Church. Children and families aren't going to Church because its #safeguarding is so poor and the Church will never help them. @JustinWelby won't be the only one covering up the abuse and the Church's poor response, as the TImes article points out.

However, an aspect of the #MakinReport is that those being blamed for 'covering up' deny ever knowing of it.
They are simply not believed.
Carey objects.
And so it continues

Fascinated to notice that the genesis of the CoE Scandal that has resulted in Welby running away, all started in that auspicious Year of the Victim: 2013.

Heartbreaking - I don't do much online these days. But will post this. Important to watch through to the end. That is an amazing letter.
But the circumstances soooo grim, dark and broken.

The ongoing analysis of why safeguarding in the CoE is not happening continues. My observation of church life even at local level is that whenever churchgoers raise concerns, the commandment to be compassionate is weaponized by church leaders to silence them.

Still struggling to process the #MakinReport, I'm surprised by the volume of academic literature across the spectrum that's been telling us the extent of the problem for yrs. This e-thesis @durham_uni also poses some interesting questions & perspectives.

"When confronted with the possibility of child abuse, it's not that these Christians are aiming for justice and missing, but that they are aiming for something else entirely."
A damning psychological interrogation of CoE (n=454+457) responses to abuse.

@dr_negrin Yes, dispiriting to listen to the desperate attempt by @Emmabarnett to secure her gotcha moment. Cottrell was the right person to answer some questions we are all asking, like what happens now, how fast can the CoE act? What are the implications? #MakinReport #R4today
The Church of England will now go back to 'business as usual' and fail to implement any of the 27 recommendations in the #Makinreport or the dozens of previous #safeguarding reports over 40-plus years that the CofE has previously chosen to ignore or disregard for over four decades; including world expert Professor Jay and the #JayReport.
Lip service at best; they seem to think if their lips are moving, that is enough.
If their 'thoughts and prayers' and 'deep sorrow' and 'lessons learned' achieved anything, then we would have seen that by now.
Why Justin Welby decided, eventually, to resign.

🤷♀️You can all pray for him and his family if you like; I am not praying.
❎The local parishes never bother praying for victims in their locality until it is dragged out of them, and even then, it will be less than a handful of times.
So, I am not bothering, either. Prayers for Welby, of course, and prayers for the 'sickness' of John Smyth.
Abusers are NOT sick; they make choices, and pervert Scripture to meet their ends.
🍎Plus, they are enabled; a bad apple supported by an orchard.
If the #CofE 'thoughts and prayers' worked, there would be less abuse and less cover up in the Church of England; unless, of course, their prayers for cover up and consequence-free abuse are being answered but victims' prayers are not.
I had my faith taken away from me. I am thinking of the victims. I know how much personal cost is involved, and how people's lives are altered for the worse.

Page 41 of the #MakinReport shows that, in 1981, Justin Welby was told to 'stay away' from John Smyth by another member of the clergy, who had received a report of abuse by a young man. The Report itself concludes that Welby would have known.
Welby did not call the police in 2013 when he was formally told, allowing the abuse of children and young men to continue until Smyth's death in 2018. Smyth only stopped when he died.
Welby seems to think that he is absolved of responsibility by not reporting it because he didn't know the extent of the abuse. For me, that is no excuse; he failed to allow the Police to do their job, and it is not his job to 'play detective' and decide how bad the abuse is. It shows a reluctance to work with the Police. Any hint of abuse, you call the Police; end of discussion. Children and young people have to come first and I believe strongly that sexual, spiritual, physical abuses are wrong and there is never an excuse for it. They will say he was under spiritual attacks and temptation but that's utter BS and another biblical excuse for abusing children.
Just as bad, I think, is the racism involved; Smyth moved to Zimbabwe and South Africa, and the Anglican community should have been told about concerns about Smyth. Smyth abused children, Black children, in Africa - and was being investigated for manslaughter when he died. The abuse was grotesque and still the Church of England have not reached out to find these children, offer help, and make some sort of reparation to the Anglican community in Africa.
There are failures all round, but Welby has shown no repentance in that he has not shown reparation towards abused children in Africa. Smyth should never have been allowed to abuse children, full stop, and he seems to have been given the ability to abuse Black and Brown children and young men by the fact that the Church of England did not do anything to stop him. Abusers will see this as a validation and encouragement, and they can use 'forgive and forget' as a tool.
A young man died, and Welby has not begun to address any of that at all. He needs to go.
Why the hell has George Carey STILL got a seat in the House of Lords?! Yet another safeguarding scandal on his watch & another collusion with a perpetrator. #makinreport
Read the #MakinReport. Clergy are told that they must abide by safeguarding policy else risk disciplinary action. That the church hierarchy want to live by a double standard leads me to conclude that there must be resignations. And lots of them. #ChurchofEngland
