We’re celebrating 10 years of the #MandarinExcellenceProgramme. Over the past decade, more than 18,500 students from England have taken part, gaining language skills and new opportunities for the future.
One of the highlights of the programme has been the intensive study trips to #China, with more than 4,000 students and teachers visiting the country.
The programme is delivered by @IOE_London, on behalf of @educationgovuk, in partnership with the British Council.

The #MandarinExcellenceProgramme is an intensive language programme that started in 2016. It has helped thousands of school pupils in England learn Mandarin Chinese through classroom teaching, self-study, intensive study and immersive cultural experiences.
Last year, more than a thousand pupils and teachers from schools across England travelled to #China for an eleven-day tour of the country to improve their Mandarin-speaking skills.
This year's visit is now underway, with another 1,000 students visiting China for a unique language-learning experience.
The Mandarin Excellence Programme is delivered by @IOE_London, on behalf of @educationgovuk, in partnership with the British Council.
An incredible few days in Wuhan! We visited a middle school, explored the Hubei Museum, climbed the Yellow Crane Tower & cruised the Yangtze River. Our students even performed on stage — and practiced their Mandarin in real life!

🌏✨Kicking off a summer of language and culture! On July 4, the opening ceremony of the 2025 #MandarinExcellenceProgramme (@MEP_Excellence) summer camp was held at #BeijingLanguageandCultureUniversity. Students from the #UK impressed the audience by sharing their Chinese learning journeys in fluent #Mandarin, expressing their excitement to explore #China and connect with local friends.
Nearly 1,200 students from 63 UK schools will spend two weeks across 11 Chinese cities, engaging in immersive language learning and cultural activities alongside their Chinese peers. Through shared experiences and friendships, they'll deepen their understanding of China and the Chinese language.

✨The 2024 UK #MandarinExcellenceProgramme (@MEP_Excellence) Summer Camp began last Sunday at #BeijingLanguageandCultureUniversity.
💕The MEP Intensive Study in #China, organized by the #CLEC and the @BritishCouncil, sees nearly 1,200 British students from 61 secondary schools visit China this year, the largest cohort since the program was launched in 2016.
🎒The pupils will not only participate in #Chineselanguage courses, but also cultural activities, such as #Chinesepainting, tea making and local sports to better understand #Chineseculture. Separate travel groups will visit different parts of the country, covering a total of 10 cities including #Beijing and #Shanghai.
🧑🎓The students, who already had a fair impression of China thanks to the program, said that they were nonetheless mesmerized by the sheer scale of the Chinese capital and its stunning architectural treasures.
👉According to Tom Dearing, principal consultant of the British Council, some participants of the program have already received scholarships to study for a master's degree in China, and "that's only the start", he said, as long-term benefits of the program will be clearly visible when these students embark on their professional careers. #CulturalExchange #MandarinExcellence #ClECProgram
The 2024 UK #MandarinExcellenceProgramme (@MEP_Excellence) Summer Camp kicked off last Sunday at Beijing Language and Culture University. The event was graced by esteemed guests from the #CLEC, British Embassy in China (@ukinchina), the UK Department for Education (@educationgovuk), and Beijing Language and Culture University.
This year, about 1,200 students from 61 participating UK schools of the MEP will immerse themselves in Chinese language learning and cultural experiences across 18 Chinese universities in 10 cities, including #Beijing, #Shanghai, #Hangzhou, #Guangzhou, and #Chengdu.
Initiated and sponsored by the UK Department for Education, the MEP aims to nurture outstanding Mandarin talents. Since its inception in 2016, the program has empowered over 11,000 pupils from 81 schools across England to achieve fluency in Mandarin.
