#Sensoryorgans in #insects are just as effective and vital for survival as they are in humans. The complexity of interactions with the environment, conspecifics, and unrelated species necessitates a wide array of sensory organs; while some may differ morphologically, they can nonetheless perform comparable functions. Sensory organs can indeed serve multiple functions, perceiving various types of sensory input. Hair-like cuticular projections often act as #mechanoreceptors, yet #evolutionary processes may modify them into #chemoreceptors, or, in some instances, enable them to perform #bothfunctions simultaneously.
This is the case with the tobacco hawkmoth; according to A. R. Ismaieel et al. (2026), the insect can actually detect odorants using fine hairs on its wings. Put simply, the moth is capable of "#smelling" with its #wings, a trait previously unknown or poorly documented in butterflies and moths. Researchers identified 21–32 #sensorybristles along the insect's #wingmargins; in addition to the raised sockets typical of mechanoreceptors, these bristles featured subapical pores and numerous wall pores, characteristics indicative of chemosensors. These #morphologicalfindings were confirmed through experiments using detached wings connected to electrodes (a technique known as #electrowingography). Electrophysiological measurements revealed that the sensory organs are sensitive to the volatile #amines #pyrrolidine and #piperidine, alkaloids released by tobacco plants. In addition to their primary olfactory organs located in their #antennae, tobacco hawkmoths are also capable of smelling using their wing hairs, an evolutionary adaptation that makes it easier for the moths to efficiently locate their preferred #egglayingsites, namely tobacco plants.
