Good afternoon, Fellow South Africans,
Ii posted this message earlier this morning, and the responses from some of you were so vile and vulgar — even from comrades, friends, and associates now caught up in the frenzied, populist Afrophobic hysteria of #MarchToMarch — that they extended to really sick threats against my wife and child, and wishes for my death while I lie here in hospital. As a result, I decided to remove the post in order to protect myself and my family. It was the first time I have ever removed a post. I always consider my words carefully before posting, and when I do post, I stand unequivocally by every word.
Yet, as I lay here in bed, I agonized the whole morning about this, and I asked myself: you were mentored by Dr Beyers Naudé and Helen Joseph — what would they have done in these circumstances? The answer was clear. When they believed something needed to be said, they never allowed themselves to be silenced, no matter what the consequences. Nor shall I allow it now, although I know that I will pay the price. So here is the same post once again:
I am sure I will be insulted and abused all over again. But once you are done with all of that, please read this carefully. Let it sink in. I do not post this out of malice, but out of deep concern for our beloved country and continent. Think deeply about what it truly means, and understand the warnings I have been issuing for some time.
I plead with you, please, do not think only with your boiling blood — think with your minds and your intellect as Africans.
As always, follow the money. Ask yourselves: Who funds #MarchToMarch?
