Marichjhapi: The Forgotten Tragedy of Jyoti Basu’s Bengal
Marichjhapi stands for the struggle of displaced, destitute people to rebuild their lives.
It symbolizes humanity’s fight against two mighty forces — Nature and the State.
It is also the silent history of a society that looked away while its own people suffered.
After two decades of refugee life, many Sanatani Hindus who had fled from Bangladesh sought refuge in the remote island of Marichjhapi, on the edge of the Sundarbans.
During elections, the Left Front leadership — including Jyoti Basu — had promised to rehabilitate refugees if they came to power.
On 25 January 1975, at a public meeting in Bhilai, Basu had declared:
> “If the CPM comes to power in West Bengal, we will bring the refugees back.”
A year before assuming power, several Left leaders even visited the refugee settlements in Dandakaranya and urged them to return to Bengal, assuring:
> “Millions of Bengalis will welcome you with open arms.”
When the Left Front government came to power in 1977, thousands of refugees believed that they could finally return to their homeland.
In March 1978, about 150,000 people sold whatever little they owned and set out from Dandakaranya toward their “promised land.”
But reality was very different.
Once in power, the government’s policy changed.
Many refugees were turned back, some imprisoned.
Yet, around 30,000 remained in Marichjhapi, determined to survive on their own terms.
They declared that they did not need government help — only freedom from interference.
In that harsh and swampy terrain, they built a self-reliant community from scratch.
They cultivated land, built roads and schools, and established fish ponds and small bakeries.
They even promised the government substantial revenue through their fisheries.
News of their success reached the press — a model of resilience and cooperation.
But this self-sufficiency soon became politically inconvenient.
That a marginalized, low-caste group of refugees could build a functioning society without state aid was seen as a challenge to the ruling ideology.
In July 1978, the party’s state committee decided:
> “All refugees who have entered West Bengal must be sent back to Dandakaranya, by force if necessary.”
Then began four months of horror.
On 24 January 1979, the island was surrounded by police launches.
All communication was cut off; the press was banned from entering.
Food, water, and medicines were blocked.
People tried to collect rainwater to survive; hunger claimed the lives of children and the elderly.
When a few young men swam across to nearby Kumirmari to fetch food, many were shot dead.
Those who tried to help — activists, journalists, and humanitarian workers — were stopped.
Even Mother Teresa, when approached for help, reportedly said:
> “We cannot go there, and we cannot explain why.”
By May, the situation reached its tragic climax.
From 13 May 1979, a final eviction operation began — lasting three days.
Houses were burnt, boats destroyed, many killed or injured, and hundreds arrested.
The exact number of casualties remains uncertain, but human-rights reports confirmed large-scale deaths and disappearances.
In journalist Tushar Bhattacharya’s documentary, the following figures appear:
Deaths due to starvation – 94
Children dead without medical aid – 177
Injured – 150
Missing – 128
Arrested – 500
Some survivors fled to Kolkata and lived as hawkers; others were forced back to Dandakaranya.
During that period, most of Bengal’s intellectual community remained silent.
A few writers — Shankha Ghosh, Subhash Mukhopadhyay, and Sunil Gangopadhyay — wrote in protest and visited the site, but there was no major public outcry.
Today, Marichjhapi is not just a historical episode —
it is a mirror reflecting state violence, social apathy, and moral failure.
