🎄✨ Holiday Flow Arts: Mini-Maces & Blackthorn Cane! ✨🎄
#MastersOfMovement continues with a festive twist. I'm experimenting with mini-maces (technically synthetic meels filled with sand) for rotational movement training, ending with a nod to the iconic Irish Shillelagh—a tool so fearsome it was outlawed!
🌀 The Moves:
The routine starts with my “Human Spin Drum,” inspired by rotational flow and the rhythm of martial arts (think Karate Kid II). The spinning integrates strength, coordination, and flow—a perfect combination for body and mind.
🌍 Cultural Context:
The Blackthorn cane has roots in Ireland, originally adapted from the traditional Shillelagh. What was once a tool for self-defense has become a symbol of heritage, craftsmanship, and strength. My movements aren’t traditional, but they pay homage to the cane's rich history while embracing creativity and flow.
📚 The Science:
Rotational training with tools like meels or maces builds functional strength, coordination, and proprioception. These practices also enhance joint stability and cognitive focus through rhythm and controlled movement. It’s a full-body workout wrapped in artistry!
🎥 The Video:
In holiday red and green, I showcase my mini-mace routine and finish with a playful flow using the Blackthorn cane. It’s my way of celebrating the season while exploring new dimensions of flow arts.
What are your favorite ways to stay active and creative this season? Let me know! 🌟

✨ #MastersOfMovement: Spinning Poi ✨
Poi spinning, an ancient Māori art from New Zealand, uses a weight on a cord swung in rhythmic, circular patterns. Once used by warriors to improve strength and coordination, poi is now an accessible movement practice embraced worldwide for its meditative and artistic qualities.
But it’s not just beautiful—it’s backed by science!
A study in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity found that after just 4 weeks of poi practice (2 lessons per week), healthy older adults experienced:
✅ Improved postural stability
✅ Increased upper limb strength
✅ Better memory and attention
Remarkably, the benefits of poi rivaled those of Tai Chi, a more traditional intervention, and included additional improvements in systolic blood pressure.

Poi spinning blends rhythm, art, and cognitive challenge into a holistic flow experience that engages both mind and body. What’s your favorite flow art? Let me know below! 👇

Hey look what I was doing with my daughter before the Nazis marched on Charlottesville. ☮️ The digital timestamp on these had us there on August 12, 2017 but if memory serves, we left and they came a day later. Maybe I’m wrong.

🚨 Introducing #MastersOfMovement 🚨
As a researcher, martial artist, and flow arts enthusiast, I’m blending science, culture, and movement to explore how flow-based practices can transform health, cognition, and well-being.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll share a series of posts showcasing movement arts like poi spinning, hula hooping, juggling, Indian clubs, rope flows, and more.
Each post will feature:
✨ A video of me practicing
🧠 The science-backed health benefits
🌍 The cultural history of each art
Why? Because movement is more than exercise—it’s an art form, a mental escape, and a science-backed way to enhance quality of life.
Let’s celebrate the beauty of movement and its benefits for mind and body. First up: Spinning Poi – stay tuned! 🔄💫

Movement break.
Testing…testing
More later. Just need to finish my grant first.

Applying for a grant means proving I can walk the talk—or in this case, *flow* the talk. They want video evidence of my skills and a strong platform to promote the art & science of flow. Here's the plan: 👇
I’ll be recording a series of videos called #MastersOfMovement over the next few days, showcasing science-backed techniques that bridge exercise, flow, and health. The goal? To bring both the art and science of movement to life.
BUT I need your help! My Insta account @illini_etclab is where I’ll post these vids alongside the research behind them. It’s new and…let’s just say, far from thriving. If you’re Covid Cautious or just love exercise, flow, and science, follow me there! 🙏
PS: I’ll also post these on X & BlueSky, but Insta seems like the best home for short, shareable content. (And hey, who knows about TikTok’s future?) Appreciate all the support, and stay tuned for the first #MastersOfMovement drop soon! 🚀
