With the support of @iom_somalia and @EU_in_Somalia, local authorities in the #Mataban district of the #Hiiraan region empowered 40 women to lead environmental peacebuilding and conflict resolution efforts in their communities, while gaining skills in natural resource management, environmental sustainability, and regenerative farming.
Macawiisley militias, who were armed by the Somali government to combat Al-Shabaab militants, have reportedly established over 30 illegal checkpoints along the route from #Beledweyne to #Mataban town.
Transport drivers have reported that the militia is demanding $200 from each vehicle passing through these checkpoints.
Concerns have grown as the government-provided weapons, intended to fight terrorism, are now being used by the militias to destabilize the Hiiraan region, with numerous unauthorized checkpoints also set up in and around Beledweyne town. #UPDATE: Reports from #Mataban district in #Somalia's #HirSabelle regional state say non-#ATMIS Ethiopian troops attempted to enter the town after crossing the border on Friday, but local forces blocked and refused the troops to stay in the area.
The troops eventually retreated from the town and returned to the border- per sources.
There is no word from the Somali government & the federal state of HirShabelle.
Lieutenant Hassan Usubow, the police commissioner of #Mataban district in central #Somalia, told local media that #Ethiopian troops attempted to enter the town after crossing the border on Friday, but security forces prevented their entry. Local residents reported heavily armed Ethiopian troops near Mataban.
