Sara shares her experience this #MaternalSepsisWeek.
In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sara was hospitalized after a hematoma formed on the edge of her cervix, causing her water to break prematurely (PPROM). She was admitted for nearly three months and closely monitored as doctors worked to keep her and her baby safe. A C-section was scheduled, but Sara never made it to the planned date, an emergency C-section had to be performed.
Just one week later, Sara developed sepsis and began progressing into septic shock. She was rushed into emergency surgery, where doctors had to remove her uterus due to infection. The surgery saved her life, but the consequences were life changing.
Now, five years later, Sara lives with the long-term effects of sepsis and the trauma that followed. She has PTSD, post-sepsis syndrome, diabetes, recurring UTIs, anxiety, and swollen limbs. Her pelvis is filled with scar tissue, and she continues to battle physical and emotional challenges daily.
Sara’s story is a powerful reminder of the long-lasting toll sepsis can take.
