Dark Box: Netanyahu Turns on Abu Dhabi — The October 7 Warning Exposes a Hidden Israel–UAE Power Struggle
A dispute over an alleged warning before October 7 is exposing an extraordinary fracture beneath the Israel–UAE partnership.
The controversy began with a Haaretz investigation alleging that UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed personally warned Benjamin Netanyahu roughly ten days before October 7, 2023, that Yahya Sinwar and Hamas were preparing a major operation capable of causing extensive bloodshed and destabilizing the region.
Netanyahu categorically denies receiving such a warning.
But Abu Dhabi took a more careful position. The UAE neither confirmed nor categorically denied the reported conversation, instead declining to discuss exchanges between leaders while emphasizing that relevant information has been shared between Emirati and Israeli authorities when necessary.
Then Netanyahu went on the offensive.
His Likud party accused Mohammed Dahlan, the Palestinian political figure based in the UAE with longstanding ties to the Emirati leadership, of being behind the Haaretz story and described the affair as “blatant foreign interference” in Israel's election.
Likud claims Dahlan wants Netanyahu removed because he hopes to become a major player in postwar Gaza and would benefit from an Israeli government prepared to withdraw from the territory and facilitate a different Palestinian political arrangement.
But Likud has not publicly produced evidence proving that Dahlan orchestrated the Haaretz investigation or that the UAE government directed an operation to remove Netanyahu.
That distinction is critical.
Yet the accusation itself is explosive because Netanyahu has effectively dragged Abu Dhabi into Israel's electoral battlefield.
Dahlan does not operate in a political vacuum. He has lived in the Emirates for years, maintains close relationships there and has repeatedly appeared in discussions surrounding possible future political arrangements for Gaza.
Likud has widened its allegations further, pointing to financial links involving journalist Shlomi Eldar and a left-leaning organization and raising questions about reported visits to the UAE by Israeli figures including Yair Golan and former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar.
None of those facts independently proves an Emirati conspiracy.
But Netanyahu's camp is now publicly constructing a narrative connecting Dahlan in Abu Dhabi, Israeli opposition circles, journalists and political contacts in the Emirates.
Dark Box sees two possible scenarios, and both carry major consequences.
If the Haaretz investigation is substantially accurate, Netanyahu faces a devastating question: did one of Israel's closest Arab partners personally warn him about a major Hamas operation before October 7, and if so, what did he do with that warning?
If Netanyahu eventually produces evidence supporting Likud's accusations, an entirely different question emerges: have UAE-based political networks moved beyond cultivating influence in Israel and toward attempting to shape who governs it?
There is currently no public evidence proving that Mohamed bin Zayed or the Emirati government directed such an operation.
But Netanyahu himself has opened that door.
The deeper significance is what the confrontation reveals about Abu Dhabi's relationship with Netanyahu.
The UAE needs Israel for security, intelligence, technology, trade and regional influence.
It does not necessarily need Benjamin Netanyahu.
Abu Dhabi's foreign policy is built around influence rather than personal loyalty. It develops relationships across political, commercial, security and media networks and maintains multiple options instead of depending permanently on a single leader.
That strategy has allowed the UAE to punch far above its size across the region.
Netanyahu may now be discovering the other side of that model.
Normalization with Israel never guaranteed Emirati loyalty to Netanyahu.
And behind the immediate controversy lies an even larger struggle: Gaza.
Who governs Gaza after the war is not simply a Palestinian question. Israel wants to shape the outcome. Abu Dhabi wants influence over the emerging regional order. Dahlan's name continues to appear in discussions about possible Palestinian political arrangements.
This is why the October 7 warning controversy matters far beyond one alleged telephone call.
It sits at the intersection of Netanyahu's political survival, Mohamed bin Zayed's regional strategy, Mohammed Dahlan's ambitions, Israel's election and the battle over postwar Gaza.
Netanyahu's camp is no longer accusing only Israeli journalists and domestic opponents of trying to remove him.
It is pointing toward Mohammed Dahlan, a powerful Palestinian figure embedded in Abu Dhabi's political orbit, and describing the affair as foreign interference.
The unanswered questions are therefore becoming more important than the accusations themselves.
Did Mohamed bin Zayed warn Netanyahu before October 7?
Why has Abu Dhabi not categorically denied the reported warning?
What role, if any, did Dahlan play in bringing the story into the Israeli media?
What were senior Israeli political and former security figures discussing during their reported contacts in the UAE?
And is Netanyahu's attack on Dahlan merely an electoral defense against a damaging October 7 investigation, or the first visible sign of a deeper confrontation between Netanyahu and the Emirati influence network he once celebrated as proof of his diplomatic success?

Abu Dhabi is turning strategic access into geopolitical leverage. 🇦🇪
Russia’s preference for Ukraine talks shows where global influence is quietly shifting.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s visit to Germany comes at a moment when nations are redefining power itself. Berlin brings industrial depth; Abu Dhabi brings strategic clarity and the speed to act. This is precisely the kind of partnership that will carry weight in the emerging global order. 🇦🇪🇩🇪
