🧬What happens when a critical thyroid hormone transporter doesn’t work?
The FDA’s approval of #Emcitate (#tiratricol) marks a major milestone for #MCT8 deficiency, a rare genetic disorder in which defective MCT8 disrupts thyroid hormone transport into the brain.
🔬Through bypassing the defective transporter, tiratricol offers a mechanism-based approach to reducing excess thyroid hormone in the circulation.

🚨#FDA Approval Update | A first-in-class milestone for #MCT8 deficiency, a very rare genetic disorder.
The FDA has approved #Emcitate (#tiratricol) for the treatment of peripheral thyrotoxicosis in patients with #MCT8 deficiency, also known as Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome.
🧬MCT8 is a transporter required for thyroid hormone entry into the brain. When MCT8 is defective, thyroid hormone builds up in the blood while the brain receives too little. Tiratricol offers a way around the defective transporter: it can enter cells without relying on MCT8, helping reduce excess thyroid hormone levels in the bloodstream.
📊Across two clinical studies, Emcitate reduced elevated thyroid hormone levels and improved cardiovascular and metabolic measures, including systolic blood pressure and heart rate.
