Valerie Kneale was a beloved grandmother, mother, and retired clerical assistant. She lived in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, and was known for her warmth, resilience, and devotion to her family. She was the kind of woman who lifted others - the main source of support and encouragement for those around her. Her six grandchildren adored her. Her community respected her.
On 12 November 2018, Valerie suffered a stroke and was admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital. She was lucid, chatty, and recovering.
By the next morning, Valerie was dead.
Nurses found her in a horrific state - βblood everywhere,β one said. A post-mortem revealed the unthinkable: Valerie had been violently sexually assaulted, causing fatal internal injuries. The coroner ruled it unlawful killing.
And yet, no one has been arrested. No charges. No justice. No accountability.
This happened inside an NHS hospital, under supposed medical supervision. A vulnerable woman was raped to death in a place of care and the system let it happen.
The NHS failed to protect her
The police failed to find her killer
The state failed to tell the truth
For years, the public was kept in the dark. Only after a whistle-blower and media pressure did the truth emerge. And still, no one has been held to account.
If a woman can be murdered in her hospital bed and the system shrugs, what does that say about our institutions?
We are told to trust the NHS. To trust the police. To trust the process.
But Valerie Kneale is dead. And her killer walks free.
