A healthy civic space demands that we protect those who protect the truth, with stronger legal safeguards, wellness support, fair contracts, and timely verified information.

Session 2 at The #MediaCSOConference focused on Civic Space & Media Status in Kenya. Findings show from various institutions show :
1. Intimidation of journalists
2. Women face increased online cyberbullying & trolling
3. Economic vulnerability – many journalists work without contracts or health insurance.
4. Mental health & wellness challenges
5. Deliberate withholding of critical information from journalists despite access to information.
6. Sustainability issues affecting media independence
7. Journalists operate in increasingly hostile environments
Journalists need stronger legal protection, mental health support, economic support & access to verified information in order to continue their work in disrupting false narrative, providing access to info, and protecting civic space.

I noted that strengthening media freedom & ensuring the safety of journalists remains a longstanding, key priority for the EU. It is important for any democratic society to ensure the survival of free and independent media.
