"The notion that Kennedy asked or persuaded the Times to suppress, hold back, or dilute any of its reports about the pending Bay of Pigs invasion is utter fancy."

Tracing the origins of #Watergate's "heroic-journalist" myth, a myth propelled by a popular motion picture released 50 years ago next week.

Flashback: 50 years ago this month, the film version of "All the President's Men" was released in U.S. theaters.
How the movie helped solidify the "heroic-journalist" #mediamyth that has become the dominant popular narrative of the #Watergate scandal.

Among the reasons this hoary tale about #Cronkite is a towering #mediamyth:
(1) Cronkite said nothing about Vietnam that hadn't been said by leading journalists many times before. By early 1968, "stalemate" was a decidedly unoriginal — and a fairly conventional — way of characterizing the war effort.
(2) LBJ did not see the Cronkite program when it aired #OTD in 1968. He was at a black-tie birthday party in Texas at the time and it is unclear whether, or when, he watched it afterward on videotape.
The presumed impact of the presumptive "Cronkite Moment" lies in its supposedly sudden, unexpected, and profound effect on the president: Such an effect likely would have been absent, or sharply diluted, had LBJ seen the program on videotape at some later date.
(3) Cronkite's remarks #OTD in 1968 were decidedly more temperate than other contemporaneous media assessments about the Vietnam War. Four days before Cronkite’s program, for example, the Wall Street Journal @wsj said in an editorial that the U.S. war effort in Vietnam "may be doomed" and that "everyone had better be prepared for the bitter taste of defeat beyond America’s power to prevent."
Not long after Cronikte’s report, Frank McGee of @NBCNews declared the war was being lost if judged by the Johnson administration’s definition.
Not stalemated.
Lost.

Tonight 1968, on CBS News special, Walter Cronkite declared that a Vietnam trip had shown him LBJ administration was wrong-- in fact, the war was in "stalemate" and U.S. should bargain for peace. LBJ reputedly reacted by saying if he'd lost Cronkite, he'd lost middle America.

Uh, not so pivotal, actually. #Murrow was quite late in taking on Joe McCarthy:

Murrow was no white knight of #journalism, and he was hardly above the poltical fray, hardly impartial (having privately counseled #Dem prexy candidate Adlai Stevenson in 1956 on speaking to the TV camera).
