Bodiam Castle, E Sussex.
I have always considered this C14th moated castle to be the most beautiful in Britain. Built to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years' War, its design is equally a clear status symbol to those who visited #MedievalMarch
Conwy Castle, Wales 🏴
Built between 1283 & 1287 as part of the walled town of Conwy. The rectangular castle is built from local & imported stone & occupies a coastal ridge, originally overlooking an important crossing point over the River Conwy #MedievalMarch
Farnham Castle Keep, Surrey.
The original keep was begun at the site in 1138. This 3-4 storey tower on a traditional motte was demolished in the reign of Henry II.
The current impressive ring wall or ‘shell keep’ was probably erected at the end of the C12th. #MedievalMarch
Ypres Tower, Rye, E. Sussex.
This square tower with 4 turrets was originally part of Rye Castle, built in the C13th to defend the major port town from the French. Between the C16th & 1891 it was used as a prison, when it then became the town morgue #MedievalMonday #MedievalMarch
Wharram Percy deserted medieval village, Yorkshire Wolds.
Founded in C9th/C10th, the village flourished until the end of C14th when it entered a period of depopulation, finally being abandoned in the C16th. The remains of >40 buildings can be seen. #SaxonSunday #MedievalMarch
St Clement’s Church, Old Romney, Kent.
Built in the mid C12th with a nave & chancel on a small mound to protect it from floodwater. The aisles were added in the C13th. The interior has a complete set of 18th century fittings #SteepleSaturday #MedievalMarch
Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire.
Built of local sandstone in the 1120s, it was a favoured royal residence throughout the #Medieval period. In 1563 Elizabeth I granted it to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who converted the castle into a lavish palace #MedievalMarch
St Briavel's Castle, Welsh borders.
An early C12th castle built on the frontier with Wales & in the administrative & judicial centre of the Forest of Dean.
It became a favourite hunting lodge of King John. Edward I later added a fine twin-towered gatehouse in 1292 #MedievalMarch
Devils’s Bridge (Pontarfynach), Wales.
This part of the River Mynach has been bridged since at least the C12th, originally with a wooden bridge (now gone). The lowest bridge today dates from later in the Medieval period followed by successors in 1753 & 1901 #MedievalMarch
Caernarfon Castle, Wales.
This large, incredibly beautiful C13th castle was designed to both withstand an attack from the Welsh & also to draw on the Welsh myth of Macsen Wledig, who dreamed of a great fort at the mouth of a river – ‘the fairest that man ever saw’ #MedievalMarch
Netley Abbey, Hampshire.
The most complete surviving Cistercian monastery in S.England. Founded in 1238 to accommodate monks from Beaulieu. It was dissolved in 1536 & was turned into a Tudor mansion until 1704 when it was sold for building material #MedievalMarch #MedievalMonday
Inside the Saxon features are harder to see. The chancel arch is original (although modified) & you can see where the E wall was later removed to make more space in the nave. You can see the Saxon font in Friday’s tweet #SaxonSunday #MedievalMarch 3/3
The window on the N wall of the chancel is an excellent example of a double splayed Saxon window opening, decorated with a double line of cable moulding. No traces of any other windows have been found suggesting it may once have been the only one #SaxonSunday #MedievalMarch 2/3
St Nicholas’ Church, Boarhunt, Hampshire.
A great example of an Anglo Saxon church with much of the original fabric & features remaining, including the vertical pilaster strip on the east wall in the right of the photo #SaxonSunday #MedievalMarch 1/3
Rochester Cathedral, Kent (taken from the top of Rochester Castle - see yesterday’s tweet).
Replacing an Anglo Saxon predecessor, the current cathedral was begun c.1080 AD, with extensive additions & alterations over the following centuries #SteepleSaturday #MedievalMarch
Rochester Castle, Kent
Built in c.1080 with the keep added in c.1130. The SE (square) turret was undermined & collapsed during an attack from King John in 1215 to reclaim the castle from rebels. It was later replaced with a semicircular one #medievalmarch @RochesterCastle
All Saints Church, in the now deserted settlement of Hope, Romney Marsh.
Thought to be founded in the C12th. It was still in use in 1543, but had fallen into decay by 1573. The church survives as a few blocks of masonry on a slight mound, surrounded by a ditch #MedievalMarch
Brinklow Motte & Bailey Castle, Warwickshire #MedievalMarch
Possibly built on top of a prehistoric barrow, the large motte stands an impressive 12m high. The bailey was an equally impressive scale however evidence suggests this was reduced as the area declined. It was fully abandoned by the C13th
