Why Men Must Be Part of the Solution to End Female Genital Mutilation
For many years, the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has been seen as an issue for women and girls alone. While they remain at the center of this conversation, my experience working with communities in Kenya has taught me one important lesson: we cannot end FGM without the active involvement of men and boys.
As a male youth champion, I have spent time engaging elders, morans, fathers, religious leaders, and young men in communities where FGM is still practiced. I have learned that meaningful change doesn’t happen through condemnation. It happens through honest conversations, trust, and a shared commitment to protect girls.
Many people assume that FGM is only a women’s issue because women often carry out the practice. But behind many of these decisions are deeply rooted social norms, expectations about marriage, family honor, and gender roles—areas where men often have significant influence. If we want to change these norms, we must engage those who help shape them.
One of the most encouraging moments in this journey has been witnessing men become advocates for change. I have seen fathers publicly declare that they will never allow their daughters to undergo FGM. I have listened to elders challenge traditions that no longer serve their communities. I have watched young men openly state that they do not want to marry circumcised girls simply because culture expects it.
These conversations matter.
Across Kenya, initiatives that bring men together under trees, in churches, schools, barazas, and youth forums are proving that dialogue can transform attitudes. When men understand the lifelong physical, emotional, and psychological consequences of FGM, many choose to become protectors rather than silent observers.
Ending FGM is not about attacking culture. It is about protecting the dignity, health, education, and future of every girl. Communities themselves are leading this change by identifying positive cultural values worth preserving while abandoning practices that cause harm.
As young people, we also have a responsibility. Young men should use their voices to reject harmful social norms, support survivors without judgment, and stand beside women and girls as allies. Real masculinity is measured not by silence but by the courage to protect those who are vulnerable.
Kenya has made encouraging progress in reducing FGM prevalence over the years, but thousands of girls remain at risk, particularly in hotspot counties. Progress will only continue if governments, civil society organizations, religious institutions, traditional leaders, women, men, and young people work together.
Ending FGM is not a battle between men and women. It is a shared responsibility.
The future we want is one where every girl grows up free from violence, free to pursue education, free to make her own choices, and free to achieve her full potential.
As a male youth champion, I remain committed to standing with communities, listening with humility, challenging harmful norms respectfully, and ensuring that the next generation of girls grows up safe.
Together, we can make FGM history, not through confrontation, but through partnership, dialogue, and collective action.
