@hrw Tnx @hrw but there are still issues to be addressed. For example what was done to ensure justice after the #Merawi and #Jiga massacres were exposed? What about the innocents who were killed by drones and heavy weapons during the 1-year war?

Amnesty International has issued a pressing plea to the UN Human Rights Council (#HRC) to renew its examination of Ethiopia following distressing accounts of civilian fatalities allegedly inflicted by the Ethiopian National Defense Force (#ENDF) in Merawi town, Amhara region.
The human rights organization demands thorough investigations into the reported deaths, deeming them “potential war crimes and extrajudicial executions” after clashes between ENDF and #Fano on January 29, 2024. Residents recounted harrowing experiences of ENDF soldiers apprehending local men on the eve of the St. Mary feast, with scores losing their lives.
Amnesty International's Tigere Chagutah expresses deep concern over the mounting instances of mass killings in Ethiopia, calling for credible efforts by the government to deliver justice. Despite Amnesty's findings shared with the Ethiopian government on 21 March, no response has been received.

Eyewitnesses report massacre by #Ethiopian soldiers in response to militia attack in #Merawi
"It was the worst thing I ever experienced in my life," said one witness of the massacre in Merawi, located in the #Amhara region. "You can only imagine this sort of thing in horror movies."
Witnesses report Ethiopian troops dragging men and boys from homes and bars, beating them, and then executing them in the streets on 29 January. Some accounts estimate between 50 to 100 were killed. "I counted at least 50 bodies on a single street, including my own brother," one man said.
The Amhara militia, known as Fano, has been fighting the Ethiopian army since last April when ordered to disband. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared a state of emergency in August to crush the revolt. But fighting has now persisted for 7 months. Indiscriminate killings of civilians are inflaming anti-government sentiment. "In Ethiopia, systemic impunity continues to embolden perpetrators of crimes," said Amnesty International.
While details are difficult to verify due to roadblocks and communication shutdowns, video footage corroborates eyewitness accounts of excessive retaliation against perceived militia sympathizers. The Ethiopian government denies troops targeted civilians.
Impunity for abuses remains a systemic concern that continues to undermine efforts for peace and justice. Amnesty International and Western nations are calling for an investigation into the Merawi killings. But some officials continue to praise military operations in Amhara.
