I NEVER WANTED to do a “TITTY BOOK”, but it’s hard to deny that is EXACTLY what “FUCKING FOR OUR FUTURE” is. So, WHAT CHANGED MY MIND…? Working for #MercPublishing.
There IS money to be MADE in INDIE COMICS, but there are VERY SPECIFIC PATHS to get to it. And as has happened prior unscrupulous men end up at the head of this business of “collectibles” because they are so good at TAKING ADVANTAGE of collectors.
When I was brought in to Merc, my best friend @Aaron_Sparrow had just been brought on to head up their editorial with the hope & promise that he could take their line of “titty books” and turn them into credible espionage & appropriately genreed comic books. Aaron went full time with them shortly after that & when finally got them all caught up with everything, they essentially fired him. Moved him from full time to whatever hours necessary to cover what they needed and no more.
My experience was equally irksome. I have a song with my band #DILFusa where the lyrics are “Money ain’t funny when it’s used this way, it should be 50-50 but you hear them say, ‘60/40 my friend, maybe 90/10!’ The money always gets you in the end.” And I remember finding it funny when I agreed to take the smallest number in the verse 10% to co-create (really create, they had the loosest of premise set up) the “Guns & Angels” series for Merc.
Of course, I started having a hard time nailing them down about the 10%. I finally wrote a very kind letter, when Aaron informed me all co-creator deals would be 5%! I never received a response. I still have nothing in writing.
When the second campaign for G&A rolled around, I wasn’t informed when it launched or CREDITED on the campaign. I had to ask to be added. Of course my “co-creators” were credited. Because it was Aaron I even worked on a Merc “Spring Special” for them at my G&A rate which was negotiated down for my now 5% ownership.
At the time of Aaron’s demotion I had just come to realize the “Spring Special” was up on Kickstarter and they didn’t tell me! Didn’t they want me to try and help promote the campaign? When I checked the campaign & still to THIS DAY I have NO CREDIT on the whole page. No one does on most of their campaigns. Unless you’re a cover artists or complained.
They don’t care about comic book people. They don’t care about comics. They think that they’ve lucked their way into a broken Casino slot machine and they are gonna pull the lever until the handle breaks off. Which leads me to “Fucking For Our Future” and why I’m doing this book.
Well, I decided to “quit” Merc, but there was no blow up of any kind. They were raping comics and they would continue to. BUT…their next book “JINKIES” was the last straw!
They made something like 70K in one day selling sexy Daphne & Velma rippoffs. And for a second I saw the owners of Merc atop a new comic book business hierarchy surrounded by other people like them and I shuddered at the thought. We cannot let these type of people take over the industry that we love the most. NOT WHEN WE ARE HERE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
So I came up w/ a simple idea, “TWO can play at THIS GAME.” WHY did I NOT wanna do a “titty book”? Because I felt that the nudity affected the story/reading experience. Was there anyway to FIX THAT PROBLEM? Well, of course there was, you’d just have to have a major aspect of the story revolve around nudity enough that nude covers would make sense! Ah-ha!!
And thus…Fucking For Our Future was BORN! I called up my friend Dizzy Arnold and we gleefully created this hilarious sci-fi battle of the sexes in just a few months w/ more smiles & laughter than on anything we’ve ever worked!
FFOF is the project I never knew I always dreamed I would do. It flies in the face of convention. There’s never been anything like it before. I hope you’ll not judge our book by its awesome COVERS!
