I talk about the #MeroeHead at the @britishmuseum It's the top of a #statue of #Augustus. The Queen of #Kush (the Romans and the Greeks NEVER defeated them) took down the statue.. and buried the head of it at the foot of a temple. So #Caesar would always get stepped on. #curate

#Kandake were HATED by the ancient Greeks and Romans because their archers were known as "eye piercers". Also, the Romans made weapons with graffiti aimed at the Queen with stuff like: "I'll get you, bitch". #Kush- awesome. #MeroeHead #InSearchOfBlackHistory-#audibleoriginal

@Bonn1eGreer @britishmuseum Perfect insult - buried deep enough not to be a trip hazard I hope.

#MeroeHead...at the @britishmuseum.-the head of a statue of #Augustus. One of the #Kandake-the mighty queens of #Kush (#Sudan) had it buried at the door of a temple. So that #Kushites could step on it! I tell this story on my #podcast-#InSearchOfBlackHistory-#audibleoriginal

Octavian was given the title Augustus by the Senate #onthisday in 27 BC, paving the way for him to become the first emperor of Rome. This bronze head of Augustus was made shortly afterwards, between 27–25 BC https://t.co/XCwu3lXqd0

#MeroeHead. We know of it because a #Kandake queen of ancient #Kush -who ruled in her own right & who fought off Romans & Greeks- had it buried in the sand. So that the Kushites could step on it!! #Sudan I talk about this on #InSearchOfBlackHistory #audibleoriginal #Saturday

We have this iconic bronze head of Rome's first emperor for a few months @VictoriaGallery in #Liverpool. Do pop in if you are in the area. His eyes are piercing, features sharp and I love the intricate detail in his swirls of hair. #meroehead #ancient #augustus
