Globular Clusters in Ophiuchus ✨🔭👀
✨✨ In the rich stellar fields of the constellation Ophiuchus, globular clusters #Messier10 (M10) and #Messier12 (M12) are celestial twins separated by only 3,000 light-years, with M10 at about 14,300 light-years and M12 at 15,700 light-years from Earth. Photographing these clusters simultaneously provides a rare glimpse into the heart of our Milky Way's halo.
🔭👀 In brightness, M10 and M12 hover around apparent magnitude +6.4, making them visible #stargazing with binoculars under dark skies. Perfect alignment is best achieved in the late spring and early summer months, when #Ophiuchus (see my 2nd image below) rises in the night sky around midnight.
🔭📷 Using a full-frame DSLR camera and a telephoto lens, we #astrophotography enthusiasts can capture the ancient starlight of M10 and M12 in a single image, like mine below. Long exposure times and multiple exposures for stacking are key to bringing out the fine details and subtle glow of the thousands of stars in each cluster.
My 1st image below, showing both clusters, is a stack of 8 subexposures of 120s each, taken at ISO 1600 with the #NikonD5 DSLR camera and the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8E VR FL zoom lens stopped down to f/4. So close together, a single wide-angle image like this shows their combined brilliance. To ensure sharp images over long exposures, and to bring the ancient light of these celestial beacons to life, a telescope mount such as my Italian @avalon_instr 🇮🇹 Linear, which can precisely track the apparent motion of the stars, is essential. As I always say, you get what you pay for, poor quality mounts are the worst investment you can make in your setup.
🦣 In historical terms, the photons captured in the image began their journey at the dawn of human civilization. When the first Neolithic villages were established in the Fertile Crescent and mammoths still roamed parts of the Earth, the light from M10 and M12 left their globes. These globular clusters have witnessed all of human history, from the building of Stonehenge to the digital age, and their light has travelled unimaginable distances to reach us.
🌍 Composed mainly of older, red and yellow stars, M10 and M12 each contain hundreds of thousands of stars and have similar compositions, indicating their age, estimated at over 12 billion years. When these clusters formed, our planet was still coalescing from cosmic dust and gas, so their ages date back long before the first dinosaurs. Observing them is like peering into the youth of the universe and the prehistory of the Earth. It is where the timelines of celestial evolution and terrestrial transformation converge.
🤔 And one more reflection, a simple question at the end: What happened in the 7 billion (!) years between the birth of M10/M12 and the birth of our planet? 🤔 Was the universe empty of intelligent life? 👽 Was it waiting for us, the best of the best, the pinnacle of evolution, the reason for creation, to arrive?

Thank you guys for joining my threads for one more night. This is @xipteras from the beautiful southern Germany. 🇩🇪 Clear skies and enjoy the #stars.✨✨

I am now processing a noisy (but lucky) 30s snapshot of the comet PANSTARRS through a cloud hole this month. Nothing special but a tough work to remove the LP and other artifacts. You know. Stay tuned. #PANSTARRS #Messier10 #Messier12 #C2017K2 #comet #astrophotography

Durante todo el mes de junio se podrán observar los cúmulos ubicados en la Constelación de Ofiuco.
Estarán visibles todas las noches en la mayor parte del planeta.

You may have seen this post before. 👀
No, this is not Messier 13, but #Messier12. Their uncanny resemblance in photos could pass as cosmic twins, but M12—aka Gumball Globular—is fainter and has more older stars than M13.
