About the #paintpot #cuttlefish #Metasepia #tullbergi (synonym Ascarosepion tullbergi) in the #tropical waters of the #IndoPacific between Japan and Hong Kong, which is strikingly #colorful and conspicuous, but still scientifically not yet well enough studied. It's also about a scientific paper dealing about the walking-like locomotion of this cuttlefish (#Metasepia, Sepiidae, #Cephalopoda).
The #paintpotcuttlefish lives in the #neritic zone, which is the #continentalshelf area until a depth of about 200 m. In case of this cuttlefish species, it prefers depths up to 100 m and there is a #faunaelement of the #benthic area, thus it is more or less a #grounddweller. The animals are characterized by short arms and their bright colors. They also have a small #skeletal element, which is atypical for cuttlefish. It is significantly smaller than the length of the mantle suggests, but as is usual for cephalopods, it is covered with #chitin.
The paintpot cuttlefish lives in a muddy habitat or even on seapins (Pennatuloidea, Cnidaria). The animals have separate sexes. In the #mating procedure, the females decide which male it will allow to mate. The males #display an impressive #behavior. The eggs are laid on rocky ground. Since the cuttlefish bone of this species is only small, it can hardly take on the function of balancing in the water column. The animals therefore not only stay on the ground, but also show a continuous mode of #walking #locomotion there, while only rarely swimming.
According to the authors A. Omura et al. (2022) a kind of #quadrupedlocomotion evolved as a specific feature of this genus (it sounds to me like an apomorphy). For this purpose they use their #ambulatoryflaps as #hindlimbs and their ventral arms as #forelimbs. While doing so they use these limbs on their left and those on their right #alternately like some quadruped vertebrates. #Histological and #behavioral studies showed that ambulatory flaps can modify their shapes by using their "#papillaemusculature and connective tissue".
