If you look back at the frequency of Al-Shabaab attacks from 23 December until today (a span of 26 days) in #Middle_Shabelle, it is evident that the group is pivoting toward the coast.
- December 23: They seized Nuur Dugle, a strategic link between Middle Shabelle to central regions of Somalia.
- December 26: In a single day, the terror group entered Ruun Shiikhow, Maxaa Saciid, and Qaahira.
These last three areas are on the outskirts of #Warsheikh district. Warsheikh lies on the coast and is only 61km from #Mogadishu.
The distance between Nuur Dugle and Warsheikh is 172km. Less than a month Al-Shabaab has managed to advance across this distance toward the coast.
But why?
This Shabaab advancement is the result of three primary factors:
1) According to intelligence sources, Al-Shabaab’s plan is to seize control of the coastal road linking #Mogadishu to the Central Regions (mainly #Galmudug State). Warsheikh is the strategic linchpin of this route, which is why Al-Shabaab militia focused their offensive toward the shoreline.
2) There is a total lack of a defensive military strategy in #Mogadishu to counter the group. This is largely due to a collapse in troop morale; many soldiers have abandoned the front lines citing grievances. We are hearing high number of guns sold in the black market by defector soldiers. This is compounded by hunger, poor welfare, and the fact that many soldiers' families have been affected by the recent forced evictions in #Mogadishu.
3) Al-Shabaab has secured agreements with local clans who are now directly assisting the militants. For example, during the #Nuur_Dugle attack, local elders and youths accompanied Al-Shabaab militia, providing intelligence on the terrain, routes and identifying specific targets.
A fourth factor shared by well-informed officers is the shift in Turkish support. The Turkish military, which previously provided critical aerial bombardment support, has reportedly grown exhausted by the Mogadishu administration's lack of planning.
Turkey, as some say, sees no viable ground forces capable of holding territory, the Turks now view Middle Shabelle as indefensible and have shifted their operational focus toward #LowerShabelle even though U.S-trained forces were the main guys who were protecting Lower Shabelle.

I failed to grasp it. Why was Gen. Qoorle was governed by @HSNQ_NISA or @mahadsalad? Was it a coordinated campaign of #Benadir and #Middle_Shabelle?
There are many unanswered questions which @HassanSMohamud must ask @mahadsalad to address. Allegedly #Farhan was asked to assist with anti #terror action outside his jurisdictional authority. He arrived at the agreed area of #Balcad but was again asked to travel across to #Basra.
