1/2 Everywhere I travel in the world and see “traditional construction” of shelters, it is remarkably the same techniques worldwide. Different materials and applications due to the place and conditions, but very similar in the purpose, shapes, site placement, etc. A home, “shelter”, used to be exactly that……a place to shelter you from the elements. In today’s world it has more to do with “curb appeal”, and not the prevailing winds. In the traditional methods of building there is “human hands”, real materials, prayers, and pride built into every home. A foundation for a good life.
This is a photo of typical construction for buildings in Ticino, which is the Italian speaking canton in southern Switzerland. The way the rock is layered for the roof. Each stone of the walls made to fit. The huge lentil and awning over the door. A true mountain home of humanity.

The big lie of architectural education
Last week I had the opportunity to visit a bucket list place of mine, @LasCatalinas in Costa Rica. This new community was conceived of by @charlesbrew and dates only to 2006 for the property acquisition. So in less than 20 years, his team has built what’s in the photos.
Simply put, the community is gorgeous. It’s humane, being largely car-free. It’s kid-friendly. It’s beautifully integrated into the hilly landscape.
But mostly what was on my mind is what this place tells me about the six years of architecture school I had, way back when….
