[WATCH]: We wear black to acknowledge, commemorate, and mourn all people with disabilities who have lost their lives to systemic ableism and violence.
Thank you to everyone who continues to stand with us and participate in the #Monday2Monday Movement.
Your solidarity matters.
#Monday2Monday | As we wear green in solidarity with individuals experiencing sensory disabilities, let's remember that sensory processing differences can profoundly shape how someone perceives and interacts with the world around them.
Sensory disabilities encompass a range of conditions affecting various senses, including:
๐ Visual impairments like blindness and low vision; auditory impairments such as hearing loss and deafness;
๐Tactile impairments affecting the sense of touch; olfactory impairments impacting the sense of smell;
๐ Gustatory impairments altering the sense of taste;
๐Conditions like Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), where the brain has difficulty receiving and responding to sensory information.
These diverse experiences, though often unseen, are a vital part of their reality. Creating space for understanding and accommodation allows those with sensory disabilities to fully participate and thrive in their own unique way.

#Monday2Monday | The journey of creating this impactful piece was not without its challenges.
Initially, the Wellness Leaders attempted to adhere the bottle caps using glue, but its lack of durability necessitated a shift in approach. Ultimately, they opted for the more secure method of drilling nails to hold the caps firmly.
This practical consideration underscores a deeper symbolic resonance inherent in the artwork. Just as the discarded bottle caps were repurposed and given a new function, the semicolon carries a profound message of resilience and choice.
In the realm of writing, a semicolon indicates a juncture where an author could have ended a sentence but chose to continue it. This mirrors the experience of individuals facing mental health challenges, where the semicolon serves as a potent reminder that even when faced with the darkest of thoughts, the choice to continue living remains.

[WATCH]: The Bottlecap Semicolon Artwork at Steve Biko Building
Acknowledging today's #Monday2Monday blue theme for emotional and psychiatric disabilities, and echoing the spirit of continuation championed by the Counselling Centre and Residence Wellness Leaders, we wanted to highlight a meaningful artwork currently displayed at the Steve Biko Building.
This intricate bottlecap creation is a powerful visual reminder that something beautiful and significant can be created even from seemingly small and discarded pieces.
In the same way, even in the face of mental health challenges, there is always the potential for growth, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose.
We encourage everyone to take a moment today to visit the Steve Biko Building and reflect on this artwork and the enduring message of hope it embodies.
We have more on the story behind the artwork. Stay tuned! ๐
#Monday2Monday continues, and today #PurpleThursdayTurnsBlue, a colour representing emotional and psychiatric disabilities.
Emotional and psychiatric disabilities encompass a diverse spectrum of conditions that significantly affect a person's emotional state, thought processes, mood regulation, and overall behaviour, ultimately impacting their ability to navigate daily life, form and maintain relationships, and experience a general sense of well-being.
Examples include:
๐Anxiety Disorders, characterised by excessive worry and fear;
๐Depressive Disorders, marked by persistent sadness and loss of interest;
๐Bipolar disorder, involving extreme shifts in mood and energy levels;
๐Psychotic Disorders like Schizophrenia, which can include distorted perceptions of reality.
These conditions highlight the intricate connection between our minds and our ability to function effectively.
The Division of Communications & Advancement and the Global Engagement Division proudly wish you a great day.

Their involvement showcases true leadership and inspires us all to get involved. Let's keep the momentum going!

#Monday2Monday | Starling House at Rhodes University, in collaboration with @RedBullZA, raised enough funds to sponsor a couple of students' participation in the global Wings For Life World Run.
Starling kicked off the #Monday2Monday campaign with a powerful charity run on Monday, April 21st, Physical Disability Awareness Day. Embracing the campaign's theme, the event, "Run for Those Who Can't," raised funds for vital spinal cord injury research.
The run from 9 am to 1 pm began with energising stretches before participants embarked on a meaningful 2.5km route around campus. The event raised enough funds to sponsor a couple of students' participation in the global Wings For Life World Run with Red Bull on May 4th.
This global run shares the same inspiring mission: to run for those who can't, with all signup fees directly supporting spinal cord injury research. The coupons for this global event will be given to deserving students from the Enable Society.

[WATCH]: Rocking red today to show our support for individuals living with physical disabilities!
As Paballo Mokoele beautifully put it for the #Monday2Monday campaign:
"Living with a physical disability does not change or define who we are."
Physical disabilities encompass a wide range of conditions that limit a person's ability to perform daily activities, including mobility, dexterity, and stamina.
