The irony of history is that a single sentence can contain multiple errors.
1. #Mosaddegh was not the first “democratically elected president.” He was the prime minister. Iran was—and hopefully will again be—a constitutional monarchy.
2. He was not the first prime minister either. In fact, he was the 30th prime minister during the constitutional era.
3. He was not “democratically elected.” His party did not hold a parliamentary majority; he was the minority leader. During a political standoff, Parliament gave him support, and he was appointed by the Shah, #Pahlavi.
4. He was popular, but he was never elected through a nationwide vote.
5. He eventually moved against Parliament, dissolved it, and ruled by decree.
6. The political crisis following the nationalization of Iran’s oil industry pushed #Iran into recession, while Mosaddegh prolonged negotiations without reaching an agreement to restart oil exports.
7. He faced strong opposition from conservatives, anti-communists, and segments of the clergy, who feared that his policies were pushing Iran toward becoming a Soviet satellite.
In the end, he refused the royal dismissal decree and chose to remain in power, gambling on the young Shah’s naivety. He lost. This was not a tragedy of democracy, but the sad story of a populist old man who sacrificed everything—and everyone—for the sake of his own ego.
Never forget that the US wants democracy in Iran so badly that they overthrew Iran’s first democratically elected president and helped install a dictator after.
