I absolutely love how Tamil has different words while talking to babies.
Thoongu - thachiko (sleep)
Ukkaru - ukachi (sit)
Vali - ooaa (pain)
Kadavul - ummachi (god)
Thayir - thachu (curd) etc.
I don't know if such words exist in other languages but I haven't seen this in other languages I know and absolutely adore this in Tamil.
We also refer to children as "it" - அது/இது (neuter gender) just like inanimate objects or animals which is a rare feature in languages.

The basic ability to learn language is innate in #humans. It is a trait as a result of #evolution. The actual mastery of the language, on the other hand, has to be #learned with great effort. For this purpose, when dealing with our small children, we use a so-called children's language (motherese) with a greatly simplified syntax, simple words, an emphatically clear pronunciation and longer pauses between individual statements, so that the child has enough time to process what has been said. In the beginning, we also try to use frequently used idioms to train the child's language memory.
Incidentally, a principle that we also apply when communicating with animals that can understand human language up to a certain level. For example, I use such simplified language when communicating with my dog because I want him to develop an understanding of human language and not just be conditioned to a few consistent commands.
Back to #intraspecific #interactions: How young animals from animal groups that communicate through spoken language and practice parental care receive the language ability from their parents is still largely unexplored. Very different groups of animals are affected, which use acoustic signals to communicate, which has repeatedly arisen independently through evolution.
However, the insects are not affected by the topic here, as they instinctively learn the right song on their own, even if freshly molted individuals may have to practice a little first. It is about groups of animals such as birds, various small mammals, monkeys or #whales. And an international research group has now looked more closely at a representative of the latter.
The team around Laela S. Sayigh has published the paper "bottlenose dolphin mothers #modify #signature #whistles in the presence of their own #calves" (2023) in the journal "Proceedings" of the US National Academy of Sciences (#PNAS).
The researchers temporarily captured individuals from a group of bottlenose dolphins with juveniles in Sarasota Bay, a lagoon on the west coast of Florida (USA), and then alternately housed mothers with their calves and with other adults to study differences in intraspecific communication. It was found that the mothers increased the maximum frequencies of their whistles statistically significantly in the presence of their young, with the frequencies also deviating significantly more from each other.
This is interpreted as a kind of children's language as we know it from humans. The authors assume that, as in humans, this serves to make it easier for the calves to acquire their own language through clearer speech and also to strengthen the emotional bond between calves and mothers. As in humans, it is also assumed that the increase in voice frequency initially serves to attract the calves' special attention.
