Also proud of my team @amaBhungane. We shared the runner up prize for our #MotiFiles series with @TimesLIVE team that included new amaB team member @GraemeHosken for their series on a Moz kidnap mafia. Our @sajournalist was also shortlisted.
This year's #TKAwards joint runners-up are @DewaldvanRensb1, @RedMicah and @SamSoleZA of @amaBhungane for the #MotiFiles, and @aron_hyman, Tankiso Makhetha and @GraemeHosken from @TimesLIVE for "Kidnapping for Ransom". Congratulations! 👏

Was the #HawalaScheme not linked to the VBS heist as well, where millions were being sent via various accounts, mainly by Zimbabweans to send money from one country to the next without being traced, and used for the purpose of money laundering.

In three recent #MotiFiles articles, released back-to-back on 16 and 17 October 2023, amaBhungane used the word ‘alleged/allegedly’ an incredible 21 times. Other words closely related to ‘allegedly’, such us ‘possibly’, ‘seemingly’, ‘apparently’, and ‘appear’ show up another 42 times. It is so bad that I quickly found 89 instances of speculative words in the three articles that solely exist for amaBhungane to cover for the fact that they are making unfounded assumptions.
It’s clear that these reporters either understand that they don’t have any proof to support what they’re saying, or that there is enough reasonable doubt in their claims that they shouldn’t be making them in the first place. This is not even to mention the many times they draw flimsy connections between generally unconnected ideas to push their narrative.
