Another State Police Patrol Vehicle Struck
At-Fault Driver Arrested for OUID
Date/Time: Saturday, June 7, 11:10 p.m.
Location: I-94 Westbound near mile marker 25, Lincoln Twp
BERRIEN COUNTY, MICH. A trooper from the Fifth District walked away uninjured after their patrol vehicle was struck on I-94. The crash occurred during a traffic stop while the trooper was standing outside.
A 33-year-old Missouri man headed westbound on I-94 veered off the road and struck the rear of the patrol vehicle. Preliminary investigation revealed the man was operating under the influence of drugs. He was arrested and lodged at the Berrien County Jail.
This marks the second crash involving a MSP patrol vehicle in the district, spanning about a week apart, highlighting the dangers officers face during routine traffic stops. Thankfully, there were no report of any injuries.
This incident could have been a devastating tragedy for everyone involved, including the trooper. As a reminder, driving under the influence of any intoxicating substance is illegal and deadly.
If you plan to indulge, do so responsibly. Don't put the rest us in danger. Stay safe, be kind, and count your blessings. #BuckleUp #MoveOver

LOCATION:
N/B I-275 near 10 Mile Rd. Farmington Hills
SYNOPSIS:
A Metro North trooper was parked on the left shoulder of I-275 near 10 Mile Road investigating a traffic crash.
The trooper was seated in the patrol vehicle when the patrol car was struck by a 23 year old male driver (Dearborn) of a Jeep Liberty.
The patrol vehicle and at-fault vehicle sustained minor damage. There were no injuries to the at fault driver and trooper sustained minor injuries and was treated and released.
“The patrol car had its lights activated and was all the way over on the left shoulder.” said F/Lt Mike Shaw. “The at fault driver failed to move over and was driving too fast for the road conditions. This is just another example of drivers failing to move over for emergency vehicles and driving too fast.”

As part of our #MoveOverDriveSafe educational campaign with the National Sheriff Association and the Wayne County Sheriff is an enforcement component with our local partners.
On January 6th, troopers partnered with the Dearborn Police Department, Huron Township Police, Livonia Police, Plymouth Police, Romulus Police, and Taylor Police to look for risky driving behaviors that lead to crashes in Wayne County.
Here are the stats from that detail:
Stops: 220
Warnings: 60
Speed: 43
Move Over Law: 57
Seatbelt: 3
Hands Free: 29

It is another cold day, so bundle up if you are heading out.
We have had quite a few morning commute crashes the last two days. Slow down, allow more room between you and the car in front of you, and remain focused on driving.
Buckle Up, Phones Down, #MoveOverDriveSafe and Be Kind
DYK: All 50 states have a form of the move over law? This year we are partnering with Wayne County local police agencies, the Wayne County Sheriff and the National Sheriff’s Association to educate drivers on the Move Over Law.
We continue to see our patrol cars struck by drivers weekly and in 2024 we lost Trooper Joel Popp and Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Kerstetter when they were struck by a passing driver.
In MIchigan, our move over law states that drivers must move over one lane AND slow down 10 MPH below the posted speed limit when they see a emergency vehicle (Police, Fire, EMS, Tow Truck, Construction Vehicle or Roadway Assistance Vehicle) with flashing lights on. When in doubt, move over.
If it is unsafe to move over, drivers must slow at least 10 MPH below the speed limit and proceed with all due care and caution past the vehicle.
The video with this post shows the dangers of when drivers do not move over.
And while it is not the law, please move over for fellow drivers that are on the side of the road.

Another December day in the 40’s. But we have the dreaded winter mix on the horizon.
So far a pretty easy commute. Hope everyone has a great day! And get that emergency car kit restocked.
