I repeat, children do not need technique training...
They don't need sprint technique...
They don't need agility technique...
They don't need sports specific training...
How do you teach technique to an athlete who's still developing the physical intelligence to learn?
Furthermore, because of growth, a 6 year old moves differently than a 9 year old who moves differently than a 12 year old.
Children need variety and diversity of movement.
Do lots of movement? In a variety of different ways. The same but different.
Do you want to develop a sprinter? Expose them to a variety of different ways to sprint.
Children need to first learn to problem solve before they can fix a technique problem!

Worrying about their 40 times or pro agility tests is largely a waste of time for preadolescents. Speed training programs are for older, adolescent athletes who are both physically and mentally mature and have developed a wide range of movement skills through proper foundational training and development. Most youth athletes are not physically prepared to take part in aย speed training programย because they have yet to develop the necessary physical foundation to express speed. If your young athlete lacks the ability to balance on one foot for 15 seconds or doesn't have the relative strength to hang from a bar for 30 seconds, it may be a clue that they need a more remedial training program rather than an advanced one. A good program for a preadolescent is one that develops a wide range of movement skills rather than specializing on developing one bio motor ability like speed.

Proper general movement training can go a long way toward helping improve overall athleticism. Movement sessions for children should be fun, engaging, challenging, and most importantly, semi-organized. Between school and sports, children spend their entire day in an organized setting being constantly told what to do. A good training program will let young athletes develop their own style of movement to be able to solve movement problems in their own unique way. Children develop this movement sense by practicing, exploring movement, and trying things out.

There are many kids who aspire to be good athletes, but they are seriously lacking in physical skills. They spend too much time on the sport and not enough time building the foundation to be good at that sport, (especially at young ages). Not a week goes by that a young athlete doesn't present deficient in some movement skill. These are simple things that are so important...how long can you stand on one leg?...How low can you squat down on one leg?...Can you do a pushup?...Can you do a pullup?..Can you jump in the air and land without collapsing into a heap...can you skip...bear crawl..hop on one leg? All these movements give a snapshot of athletic ability. This is why early exposure to movement training is so important these days. Improved performance is just the tip of the iceberg, injury prevention, overall health and having a sound body and mind, that will allow for the enjoyement of activities for a lifetime. Time to get moving!
