Flexicap funds give fund managers more freedom. But has that freedom translated into better returns?
The numbers tell the story.
Over the past 3 and 5 years, #multicap funds have outperformed #flexicap funds- both at the benchmark level and across fund categories.
The Nifty 500 Multicap 50:25:25 TRI beat the Nifty 500 TRI by:
• 2.4 percentage points (3 years)
• 1.8 percentage points annualised (5 years)
Category returns tell a similar story:
• +2.96 percentage points over 3 years
• +2.49 percentage points over 5 years
The reason isn't necessarily better stock picking. It's also portfolio construction.
While flexicap funds have largely continued to keep 60%+ in large caps, multicap funds are required to maintain exposure to large, mid and small-cap stocks. That structural allocation helped them capture the broader market rally of the last few years.
