Today, exactly two years ago, crypto OG and founder Nikolai #Mushegian @delete_shitcoin tweeted this and a few hours later, he was found dead.

A 29-year-old genius, co-founder of MakerDAO, architect of DAI, Balancer, and RAI, found lifeless off Condado Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico, fully clothed, wallet in pocket, just hours after posting a cryptic message accusing intelligence agencies of plotting his murder:

🔺Who Nikolai Was
Nikolai Mushegian was one of the founding architects of decentralized finance.
He helped design DAI’s collateral system at MakerDAO, wrote critical smart contracts that made early DeFi stable, and co-authored Balancer’s automated market maker model in 2019.
In 2020, he created RAI, the first stablecoin free from U.S. dollar pegs, a true crypto-native currency that could survive without fiat backing.
He also contributed to Wrapped Ether (WETH) and BitShares, and advised projects focused on privacy, cryptography, and decentralization.
He believed that open code was humanity’s best defense against corruption.
He once wrote:

Born in Lexington, Kentucky, to immigrant parents from the former Soviet Union, he graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 2014 with a degree in Computer Science.

A few hours later, at around 9:15 AM, a surfer spotted his body in the waves near Ashford Avenue.
He was found fully clothed, with his wallet and identification intact.
The beach is known for strong riptides and frequent drownings.
Authorities found no evidence of foul play, only a small laceration on the back of his head, likely caused by rocks or reef impact.

Police treated the case as a standard accidental drowning.
No autopsy results suggesting homicide were ever made public.
Toxicology findings were not released.
His family later issued a statement:
