“You can´t park there Sir!” – The Alraigo Incident turns 43 today June 6 1983: A Royal Navy Sea Harrier makes an emergency landing on the civilian cargo ship “Alraigo”, off Portugal. No injuries, and the jet was repaired. On a training exercise, pilot Ian Watson got lost, was running out of fuel, and was about to eject when he improvised the maneuver on the vessel. The airframe [Reg. ZA176] was operated until 2003 and is currently in a museum in Newark(UK). Its combat record included service in the Falklands and the Balkans. Note in the pictures two other curiosities related to this accident. One has a sign reading “We want to be English” and “The Government won´t help us”, in an apparent political protest from Gibraltar using this bizarre incident as a backdrop. The other is a 1970s BAE advertisement that already mentions the Sea Harrier´s ability to land on ships that are NOT Aircraft Carriers, which turned out to be the case. Note as well that one of the vessels appearing in this poster is the General Belgrano, the Argentine cruiser sunk during the Falklands War.
