⚠️ A rare-earth supply shock is jolting the auto industry.
#China, controlling 95% of #NdFeB magnet production (crucial for EVs), has restricted exports—threatening EV output globally.

What’s happening with rare earth magnets, and why it matters for India 🇮🇳🔋
Rare earth magnets are super strong magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and electronics. They're made using rare earth elements, and China dominates this space, producing around 90% of them, controlling nearly the entire supply chain.
Now, China is tightening exports, using its control over rare earths as a geopolitical tool. As a result, India is feeling the heat.
Indian automakers are facing stricter restrictions than others when importing these magnets from China. In one case, a shipment to an Indian unit of a global company was blocked, while its US and German branches were allowed to import the same magnets.
Industry insiders warn that if this continues, production in Indian auto factories could come to a halt in just days.
This is a wake-up call for India to speed up domestic production and diversify global partnerships, before supply chain shocks become the norm. ⚠️
India Powers Up ⚡
However, India is ramping up efforts to become self-reliant in rare earth magnets, key components in EVs and tech devices.
IREL (India Rare Earths Ltd) has partnered with BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) to set up a rare earth permanent magnet plant in Visakhapatnam. Though the plant will initially produce just 3,000 kg, BARC’s expertise could help expand capacity across the country.
IREL already runs a major rare earth extraction facility in Odisha, producing around 11,000 tonnes of concentrate.
Meanwhile, global player Trafalgar Group is building a plant in Gujarat, aiming to meet 20% of India’s demand for neodymium-iron-boron magnets, essentially used in EVs, by 2027.
GMDC is developing one of the world’s largest rare earth deposits at Ambadungar, a village in Gujarat. The development consists of an open pit mine, processing plants, bulk power supply, and much more. These deposits contain light rare earth elements (LREE) which are critical minerals for most economies globally. The ore will be mined from an open-pit mine and transferred for processing through crushing, milling, conditioning and floatation to form a mixed rare earth concentrate.
India isn’t just focusing on domestic rare earth and critical mineral supply, it’s going global. 🌍
Through Khanij Bidesh India Ltd, the country is exploring partnerships in South America and Australia for key minerals like lithium, cobalt, and beryllium, that are crucial for EVs and batteries. 🔋
For rare earth elements, India is working with Central Asian nations via the India–Central Asia Rare Earths Forum. One standout partner: Kazakhstan, a resource-rich country with 15 of the 17 rare earth elements India needs.
Such collaborations could boost tech, reduce import dependence, and strengthen India’s place in the global magnet supply chain. ⚡🇮🇳
