Serendipity! I finally met face-to-face Lydia Middleton, Executive Director of @asist_org at yesterday's @neasist #NEASIST2020 #PrivacyPuzzle program. ASIS&T has been my primary professional org since the mid 90s. Cutting edge research & practice for information professionals.
@InfAgit gave us a practical, effective example of librarians working with patrons to address privacy issues. Yesterday at #NEASIST2020 @neasist Education is a key part of addressing the #PrivacyPuzzle Inspiring. Plus curriculum materials to share.
@eminencefont gave us a hard, realistic view of Troublesome Tech Trends at yesterday's @neasist #NEASIST2020 #PrivacyPuzzle event. Surveillance capitalism is certainly growing but the library profession is confronting this trend. Learn, advocate, inform & resist.
Very informative & engaging program by @neasist yesterday #PrivacyPuzzle #NEASIST2020 at @SimmonsUniv More photos to come. @asist_org @SimmonsASIST @SimmonsSLIS So glad to be a part of this community & profession.
An actual tech person - a non-librarian who had come to #NEASIST2020 bc he follows privacy stuff - confirmed stereotypes when he described his fellow coders who are mostly white men who have never been bullied and genuinely have no idea of negative consequences of digital tech.
And @mikeleach42 also pointed to this Pew report on how people approach facts and information (has to do with overlapping factors including trust). https://t.co/tWq8qyfRF0

It's the only profession to be singled out in the whole report! (But given that it was published only a few years after the PATRIOT Act and all of some librarians' visible activism during the mid-aughts, maybe that's why?)

.@mikeleach42 highlighted the 2007 National Resources Council report on "Engaging Privacy & Info Technology in a Digital Age," which has a chapter on librarians and how we're at the forefront of these discussions, incl re privacy issues. https://t.co/KiPN2eOcLJ #neasist2020
About the study @michaelzimmer did on librarians' attitudes towards privacy. "Overall, the results indicate a high level of concern among respondents over information privacy and a desire to control access and use of personal information..." https://t.co/bLCTvZMW79 #neasist2020
#NEASIST2020 is long over, but now's when I'm on a bus in traffic and have time to non-live-tweet a few more notes. E.g. here is a Pew report @mikeleach42 discussed. Majorities of Americans are concerned about online surveillance! https://t.co/xOcX8bODCS
Do you read license agreements before you click agree? Past-ASIS&T President @mikeleach42 explores this question and many more at the @neasist Conference. #neasist2020 @asist_org
Something else new-to-me that @eminencefont shared - some of the discontent that pushed West Virginia teachers to strike last year was a creepy wellness app, Go365, they'd be forced to install and use. Some of that context at https://t.co/0Qoce5bru2
#NEASIST2020
.@eminencefont threaded her talk with concepts via Shoshana Zuboff (who of course wrote a long book I did not read), including the key framing questions re digital tech:
Who knows?
Who decides?
Who decides who decides?

Great presentation by @eminencefont on Troublesome Tech Trends at the @neasist conference. Lots to think about! #neasist2020 @asist_org
