We hope Tamil Nadu is the beginning of more state-level #NIEORCourses where through one-year, modular, output-based courses, we not only build criticial mass of operational/ implementtion researchers within the state health system but also answer priority research questions
One step at a time.
#NIEORCourses are contributing towards building critical mass of trained operational researchers within national health programs and state health departments.
We are excited to begin the @icmr_nie and DME&R-led Tamil Nadu State-level Operational Research Course (2026-27). This week, we are conducting Module 1: Operational Research and Protocol Development, 21 to 26 September 2026
12 mentees involved in providing primary, secondary and tertiary level care in Tamil Nadu will implement one mentored operational research project each, addressing a priority question identified by the state
This is one among the many modular, output-based, one-year, certificate #NIEORCourses bridging the know-do gap in operational/ implementation research and answering priority questions of national health program and states.
The teaching format in #NIEORCourses includes i) Lectures/ discussion, ii) group work/hands-on mentorship and iii) plenary presentations from mentees.
Below are some working photos of mentee-mentor groups (n=6) during module 1 of the @icmr_nie and @GIM_Sanquelim led National Operational Research Course on TB-Undernutrition, Differentiated TB Care, and TB Mortality.

These #NIEORCourses are led by the Division of Health Systems Research, ICMR-NIE and conducted under the aegis of ICMR School of Public Health, hosted at ICMR-NIE.
This specific course is the output of an Expression of Interest (EoI) for Operational Research Courses that we had floated in February 2026. National Program for Prevention and Management of Trauma and Burn Injuries (#NPPMTBI) was one of the many national programs and state health departments that submitted an EoI. We have agreed to implement national OR courses focused on trauma and burn injuries to build a critical mass of trained operational researchers in the program and to answer priority program-relevant questions.
