Representation in books contributes to how children see the world around them. If children can not see themselves in the characters/books the may not connect as well as feel that the experiences and thoughts are ones that can only happen to others... #NJLibchat

Every kid deserves to see, hear, and read about characters that look like them, come from similar backgrounds, or have had the same struggles. It empowers and inspires. On the flip side, I believe children need to see people other than themselves in literature. #njlibchat

#NJLibChat It is our duty as educators to ensure that all students feel seen & heard. That means MC Lit must have a permanent spot on the shelf. When we prioritize all stories & showcase them at all times, we make space for more stories and acceptance.

#NJLibchat there are so many books to choose from at the high school level. Here are a few I teach: Darius the Great is Not Okay, Patron Saints of Nothing, I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. When I was in (Catholic) high school, I remember reading The Chosen by Chaim Potok.

A3: I look for authenticity and accuracy by researching the culture and authors background. I look for signs of stereotyping or cultural appropriation and the visual representations. I look at reviews, recommendations, and compare multiple sources. #njlibchat

@kirstyn817 #njlibchat Right! We should "consider books that offer multiple perspectives of multicultural characters so not to support stereotypes and paint a single picture of a represented culture" (Short, Lynch-Brown,Tomlinson, 175).
#NJLibchat reading vetted reviews and researching the authors/illustrators can help you evaluate books for accuracy and authenticity. I also agree with so many of you that all books should be pre-read for any stereotypes and/or inaccuracies.
