This week, we feature the gorgeous 'Sunset Red Torch Ginger' (Etlingera elatior) at the #NLScampus. You can usually find these striking flowers in shades of red, pink, or coral which can reach up to 12 inches in diameter. This tropical plant is known for its vibrant, torch-like blooms and edible flowers with a sour-sweet taste. It is part of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, and is grown both for its ornamental beauty and its use in tropical cuisine. It is also commonly referred to as Torch Lily, Torch Ginger, Sunset Ginger.

This week, we feature the Blue Trumpet Vine or the Laurel Clock Vine on the #NLScampus, botanically identified as Thunbergia laurifolia. This species is native to regions including India, Thailand, and the Indomalayan realm. It's a hermaphrodite flower which is trumpet-shaped with a short broad tube. The flowers usually open early in the morning and abort in the evening of the same day.

This week, we feature the vibrant and colourful 'Heliconia rostrata' at the #NLScampus, commonly called 'hanging lobster claw' or 'false bird of paradise'. Known for its long, paddle-shaped lush green leaves, this plant has downward-facing flowers which can be a source of undiluted nectar, thereby attracting birds and insects.
Also referred to as as the "Magic Flower of the Incas," it is one of the two national flowers of Bolivia - it displays the red, yellow & green colours of the Bolivian flag and is considered a national symbol.

They are known for their vibrant pink, lily-like flowers that bloom after rainfall, adding beauty to gardens and landscapes. They are low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. They are commonly used in garden beds, borders, rock gardens, and container gardening, and can naturalise in certain areas.
