TWO HEROES ran TOWARD the g*nfire at Silver Rail Elementary in Oregon, and police say their actions almost certainly prevented even more children from being k*lled. One was a teacher inside the classroom. The other was an armed father who saw the attack unfolding and chose to go in. Police say 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, a former special-needs student at the school, forced his way into Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, after firing through the glass of locked double doors with a pump-action 12-gauge shotg*n. He entered a special-needs classroom and opened fire, k*lling three children ages 5, 8 and 11, along with 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. A 7-year-old child and 54-year-old teacher Becky Drury were seriously wounded. Then one teacher fought back. Police Chief Mike Krantz said she threw her cellphone at the shooter, tackled him and physically struggled with him for control of the weapon while children were still in the room. Krantz said she was not injured and “almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed,” calling her willingness to fight for her students “true heroism.” Outside the school, 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco, a carpenter and father of two girls who attend Silver Rail, saw the shooter firing before he entered the building. Giamanco retrieved his legally owned .40-caliber handgun from his vehicle and followed him inside. When he reached the classroom, he saw the teacher still struggling with the shooter and opened fire, fatally sh*oting the 16-year-old before police arrived. Officers reached the school roughly three minutes after the first 911 call. Giamanco’s family says he does not consider himself a hero because he wishes he could have saved more people. The family of teacher Megan Lambert sees it differently. They publicly thanked him for risking his own life to protect others and called him a hero. In the middle of absolute horror, two people chose to move toward the danger instead of away from it. That is heroism. #BendOregon #SilverRail
