Motaz Azaiza strikes me as a naïve young man who vaulted into global fame after October 7, part of a generation raised under Hamas’s shadow. Though not a Hamas operative himself, what he’s now revealing across podcasts and interviews is extraordinarily consequential: Hamas exercised total control over journalism and media in Gaza, and every layer of public life was co-opted in support of its interests and narratives.

In this clip, he openly admits that he moved around Gaza in Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances, a system long exploited by malign actors, including Hamas, for protected mobility. This isn’t unique to Gaza; combatants in many conflicts have abused medical vehicles to gain battlefield advantage. None of that necessarily excuses Israeli strikes on ambulances. But it does expose Gaza’s open secret: non‑medical personnel routinely used the health sector for shelter, transit, access, and resupply.

This compromised ecosystem inevitably created opportunities for Hamas and other violent extremist actors, responsible for severe harm and repression, to operate under humanitarian cover, inviting Israeli suspicion and retaliatory force that ended up killing innocent Palestinians.

Motaz Azaiza, a Gazan journalist evacuated during the war and someone who has personally attacked me, is finally saying the blunt truth. Gaza‑based “journalists,” whether tied to Al Jazeera, Hamas, foreign outlets, or social media, systematically self‑censored and hid anti‑Hamas sentiments inside the Strip. Their mission was to maintain a narrative centered solely on Israel and to erase any dissent, criticism of Hamas, or diversity in Palestinian views. Azaiza describes how he struggled with supposed “journalists” who shut off their cameras whenever Gazans condemned Hamas or tried to hold it responsible for the catastrophe it brought upon them, from October 7 to the ruinous “resistance” mythology that followed.

So to anyone repeating the line that Gaza had “more journalists killed than WWII and Vietnam combined,” think carefully about who and what you are calling a journalist in territory fully controlled by a violent extremist organization responsible for severe harm and repression. This does not deny that Israel’s offensive killed or injured real journalists. But it does expose how tightly Hamas has curated and policed the narrative for three years since October 7.

A friend of mine from Gaza shared a video of Hamas attacking a defenseless Israeli father in Sderot on October 7, trying to shield his baby daughter from danger, asking if whoever killed that man protecting his child hopes to somehow “enter heaven” afterward. It didn’t take long for the post to go viral and attract the rage and ire of the Jihadi and pro-Hamas voices in the “pro-Palestine” movement, particularly among Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims in Western diaspora communities. These are the same people who will tell you that they are “not pro-Hamas,” but are pro-the Palestinian people, even though every ounce of their existence, activism, rhetoric, and being is about supporting antisemitic violence against Jews, regardless of how innocent they are. For many, they claim to care about Palestinian and Gazan voices until those voices offer uncomfortable and inconvenient perspectives. A disgusting shame!

Azaiza is an influential "photojournalist" from Ghazza. TIME named him to the TIME 100. He was nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize. CNN, the Guardian and Sky all interviewed him.

Ms. Rachel Griffin-Accurso, who has 16 million subscribers, made a video for preschoolers introducing "my friend Motaz." She deleted it later.

Two weeks ago, he did a 3 hour and 38 minute interview in Arabic.

He made a number of EXTRAORDINARY admissions.
