The Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey #NSCS2019 shows 45% Nigerians said they feel dissatisfied with their lives right now; compared to 40% who said they feel satisfied, and 15% who were indifferent.

According to the Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey #NSCS2019, about 1 in 5 Nigerians (21%) said they do not trust the government. Could this be what is playing out in view of the current protests to #EndSARS and #PoliceBrutalityInNigeria despite the govt’s promises?
The report offers several recommendations based on our findings, such as:
- support GSAs 👥
- train staff in LGBTQ-supportive practices🧑🏫
- expand access to LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum 📚
- implement LGBTQ-affirming policies ⚖️

20 years of data underscore the importance of continuing to invest in LGBTQ-affirming school resources & supports. Our data also indicate the need for greater advocacy at the school & district level, given the lack of progress around comprehensive & affirming policies. #NSCS2019
LGBTQ student experiences also differed by race/ethnicity. For example, Black LGBTQ students were more likely than others to feel unsafe about race, and Indigenous LGBTQ students reported more anti-LGBTQ school experiences. #NSCS2019
LGBTQ students are a diverse population & our report explores how their experiences differ across demographic and school characteristics. For example, transgender and nonbinary students reported more anti-LGBTQ experiences than cisgender LGBQ students. #NSCS2019
School harassment & discrimination are bad for: academic outcomes, school belonging, & psychological well-being.
LGBTQ students who experienced discrim were over twice as likely to skip school due to feeling unsafe, compared to those who didn’t experience discrim. #NSCS2019
Difficult to sit with facts from #NSCS2019 with #GLSEN. For example, when an #LGBTQ+ student reported victimization at school, 42.5% of the students were told to ignore it and 43.2% staff took no action. We must do better. #Ally #TeacherAlly
The majority of LGBTQ students (59.1%) experienced some form of anti-LGBTQ discrimination at school – including those restricting expression of their LGBTQ identity, limiting their inclusion in extracurriculars, and enforcing adherence to “traditional” gender norms. #NSCS2019
Most LGBTQ students do not report harassment to staff – most often because they don’t think staff will respond effectively.
When students do speak with staff about harassment, staff typically do nothing or tell the student to ignore it. #NSCS2019
There has been a general decline in anti-LGBTQ language over the past 20 years, but in 2019 LGBTQ students reported significant increases in hearing “gay” used in a negative way as well as the term “no homo.” #NSCS2019
All students should feel safe at school. Yet, 4 in 5 LGBTQ youth feel unsafe at school due to a personal characteristic – most commonly regarding their sexual orientation. #NSCS2019
