In today's Trivia Tuesday, Yawming connects the dots from #ARPANET to #NSFNET to the #Internet... to #Skynet? I wonder if there should be something before Skynet about an #ArtificialIntelligence network. Hmmm.

What was #NSFNET and is it still used today?
NSFNET, or the National Science Foundation Network, was a major computer network in the United States that was developed in the mid-1980s. It was created by the National Science Foundation (#NSF) as a way to connect universities and research institutions across the country and to promote scientific collaboration and research.
NSFNET played a crucial role in the growth of the internet and the development of the World Wide Web. It was one of the earliest high-speed networks and was used to transmit large amounts of data and support scientific research. The network used the TCP/IP protocol, which is now the standard protocol used for transmitting data on the internet.
NSFNET also played a significant role in the development of the commercial internet. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, NSFNET allowed commercial companies to connect to the network and use it for business purposes. This helped to spur the growth of the internet and led to the development of the modern internet and the World Wide Web.
However, by the mid-1990s, NSFNET had become outdated and was unable to keep up with the increasing demands of internet traffic. In 1995, NSFNET was decommissioned and replaced by a series of commercial internet service providers.
Today, many of the technologies and protocols developed for NSFNET, such as TCP/IP, are still used in the internet infrastructure. However, the network itself is no longer in use, as it was replaced by commercial internet service providers.
Overall, NSFNET played a significant role in the development of the internet and the World Wide Web. It was one of the earliest high-speed networks and helped to promote scientific collaboration and research. While the network is no longer in use, its legacy lives on in the technologies and protocols that underpin the modern internet.
