This is how future intelligence from space will be done - with swarms of small satellites working in coordination to provide pervasive surveillance from Low Earth Orbit through hyperspectral capabilities. After the current government saw fit to scrap #NSMEO to raid the allocated funds for 'budget repair', we must move forward to future capabilities. With space-based ISR in mind, Australia must learn from this example, particularly as it considers future @DefenceAust space projects such as DEF 799 Phase 2. Let's not make the mistake of going down the path of yesterday's thinking by investing in a limited number of large, expensive satellites that then create a vulnerable and exquisite capability. The future is proliferated constellations in LEO. @AIPIO #Intelligence2023

“We've seen over 300 satellites surveying ground-based activities and the number of overflights is over 3,000 since the start of the Malabar exercise centred around the Sydney Harbour Bay Area” https://t.co/9FJykCH05W

Fantastic commentary by @ASPI_org's @bec_shrimpton on the really uncertain state of Australia's #Space Industry following cuts in spending by the Minister for Science, Industry and Resources. The cancellation of #NSMEO by the Minister, following his budget cuts coming out of the 2023-24 budget, and absence of a completed National Space Policy, are all undermining confidence domestically in this vitally important sector, and amongst Australia's international partners. I fear we are losing focus and momentum which will only cost jobs and future prosperity.

When the US and Australian ministers met last weekend to discuss plans for further defence cooperation, it included a new deal on space. Despite this, there is anger in the domestic industry at the decision to scrap a string of space initiatives. @nadiasdaly #abc730
