National Service or National Risk? ABOLISH NYSC NOW!
#30daysrantchallenge #30daysrantchallege #NYSCMustGo #RevolutionNow #NYSC
Nigeria is currently struggling with severe challenges of insecurity that threaten the safety and well-being of its citizens. From rampant kidnappings and banditry to terrorism and ethnic conflicts, the country has become a dangerous terrain, particularly for young Nigerians deployed under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The very essence of NYSC—to foster national unity and ethnic tolerance—has been overshadowed by the grim reality of insecurity, making it imperative to abolish the program.
The security situation in Nigeria has deteriorated significantly, with corps members increasingly becoming victims of violent crimes. Kidnappings for ransom have become a lucrative business for criminals, and unfortunately, NYSC participants are often easy targets. The shocking advisory in the NYSC handbook instructing corps members to prepare their families to pay ransoms in case they are kidnapped is a stark admission that the government cannot guarantee their safety. When an institution created for national integration now indirectly endorses ransom payments, it is evident that the risks far outweigh any supposed benefits.
Beyond kidnappings, corps members face other threats, including communal clashes, religious extremism, and banditry. Many have lost their lives in states plagued by insurgency, while others have suffered psychological trauma from violent encounters. It is both illogical and inhumane to mandate fresh graduates to serve in regions where even security operatives struggle to maintain order.
NYSC Has Outlived Its Usefulness! Scrap It Now!!
When NYSC was established in 1973, Nigeria had just emerged from a civil war, and the initiative aimed to bridge ethnic divides and promote unity. However, in today’s Nigeria, ethnic divisions remain pronounced, and the program has failed to achieve true national integration. Instead, it has become a bureaucratic obligation that exposes young Nigerians to life-threatening dangers.
Moreover, the economic situation in the country has made NYSC unsustainable. Many Corps members are deployed to organizations that do not pay stipends, leaving them struggling to survive. Additionally, the government’s allowance for corps members is grossly insufficient in the face of rising inflation, forcing many to seek alternative means of livelihood while serving. If the goal is national development, empowering youths through skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, and employment opportunities would be far more beneficial than sending them into harm’s way! But where are the employment opportunities? Even after risking our lives to serve a country under a terrible government!
The insecurity in Nigeria has rendered NYSC not just obsolete but dangerous. It is unacceptable to send young graduates to unsafe regions under the guise of national service when the government itself acknowledges the life-threatening risks they face. Instead of NYSC, the government should explore alternative programs that prioritize youth empowerment without endangering lives.
NYSC has become a relic of the past that no longer serves its intended purpose. The safety and future of Nigerian youths must take precedence over outdated nationalistic ideals. Until Nigeria can guarantee the security of its citizens, the logical and moral step is to abolish NYSC and focus on policies that provide young people with opportunities, not dangers.

Honestly this Administration is the worst thing that has happened to us as a country!
