Some of the swarms we caught this summer.
The instinct to swarm can occur for several reasons. But the root cause is the bees not having enough access to a unique pheremone from the queen bee.

A green shield bug,
Unfurling ferns.

A peregrin falcon nesting high above some of our hives. She sat and stared while I had my lunch, started shrieking when I finished.
Last of the blackthorn blossoms,
Willows full of pollen,
A black lamb,
Chickweed,

Thoroughly enjoyed this weekend at Ballymaloe Craft Fair. My father Micheál was unable to make it in person but I had him looking over my shoulder all the same. 💛
Thanks to all who came to our stall to buy or just chat. See you all next weekend! #irishhoney #nativehoneybees

This lovely weather has allowed our bees to start bringing in nectar. Once back at the hive they deposit the nectar into multiple cells and evaporate the excess water. Looks like it wont be long until our first harvest of the year.

1.May 20 is #WorldBeeDay not just about bees and certainly #NotAboutEuropeanHoneyBees #NotApisMellifera #Conservationists #Ecologists but there are #NativeHoneybees like #ApisCerana #ApisFlorea #ApisDorsata and #TetragonulaIridipennis in #India 👇Thread & more in mine below
Tomorrow is #WorldBeeDay and I can already see the status quo (i.e. pro-capitalist, pro-colonial, overly simplified and just plain wrong) narratives are going to dominate.
Great to be able to teach beekeping again & on the grounds of the magnificent @burghleyhouse. The day was split into a mix of theory & hands on sessions & breaks for tea, lunch & scones to finish the day
