The process began with the deposition of the Pennsylvanian-age Pottsville Sandstone, a thick sequence of cross-bedded fluvial and deltaic sands, in a shallow coastal plain environment along the ancient Appalachian basin. Over time, the overlying softer shale and coal layers were preferentially eroded by the downcutting action of the New River (a precursor to modern streams in the area), which exploited joints and bedding planes in the rock. The iron ore (hematite) veins within the sandstone increased its hardness and resistance to chemical and mechanical weathering, preserving the arch while surrounding softer materials were removed through dissolution by acidic rainwater and physical abrasion from flowing water, wind, and gravity-driven mass wasting.
