Today's literal Bug of the Day is this small grasshopper I spotted on a hike last week. Possibly a species in the genus Melanoplus. Was about 1 to 1.5 inches long. Was good at camouflage and jumping. Did not fly.

Today's literal Bug of the Day is this Leaf-footed Bug I spotted at the end of my final hike of August.
This is the species Acanthocephala terminalis. Can produce a defensive scent from its thorax. Was around 2 cm long.

Today's literal Bug of the Day is this small female cricket I found in the garage about a week ago.
After doing some research, it appears to be a Japanese Burrowing Cricket (Velarifictorus micado) nymph. It was pretty passive.

Today's literal Bug of the Day is this longhorn beetle I spotted at home a few weeks ago.
This looks to be a Pole Borer (Neandra brunnea). Was around 2 cm long with very hard elytra. The larvae develop in moist, decaying wood.

Today's literal Bug of the Day is this Monarch Butterfly I spotted while hiking up a mountain last week. Looks to be a female.
The photos were hard to get since it was on a tree branch and my phone's autofocus wasn't cooperating.

This is probably the Common Eastern Bumble Bee (Bombus impatiens). I've photographed the same species at the same spot before.

This looks to be a species of skimmer (Libellulidae family), possibly a Blue Dasher.
