💧In 2016, 🇨🇭Switzerland became the first country to legally require wastewater plants to strip out "micro pollutants" (💊drug residues, ☢️pesticides and ⚗️other chemicals which harm wildlife and threaten drinking-water sources).
💧The Swiss government funds upgrades through to 2040 so more than 100 wastewater plants will be able to add an extra "4th" stage (ozone or activated carbon) to remove more than 80% of these trace chemicals. This 4th stage acts like a chemical sponge soaking up micro chemicals before effluent returns to rivers, improving conditions for 🐟fish, 🪼invertebrates and 🗾river biofilms.
💧After filtering, the spent activated carbon still contains the micropollutants and other chemicals so it has to be handled carefully after its useful life. The pollutants may be ⚠️toxic, persistent or bio-accumulative if not handled properly via regeneration/re-activation, safe disposal, sludge treatment, solids handling. Proper disposal/management ensures the filtration is not just "transferring the contamination" elsewhere but actually neutralising or safely locking it away.
💧Even though there's a cost of handling the spent charcoal having that "final filtration" step, it prevents a large proportion of micropollutants from entering rivers, lakes, etc which is much harder to remediate downstream.
🔍Meanwhile in the UK, Citizen Science found 75% of 🔬tested river sites are in poor ecological health with hotspots around the Thames and Anglia.
🌍What about Africa? A continent-wide assessment shows more than 34% of rivers fail to meet "good ambient water quality" due to pollution putting ecosystems, fisheries and 🚻human health at risk (algal blooms, oxygen crashes, bioaccumulation, unsafe water).
▶️IS THE WATER DRINKABLE AFTER MICROPOLLUTANT FILTRATION?
💧NO - final effluent isn't piped straight into 🚰taps. But removing micopollutants protects downstream drinking-water sources and cuts treatment risk and cost.
💧Field studies in Central Europe report healthier aquatic communities after upgrades (fewer toxic effects, better invertebrate and 🐟fish metrics).
💧Even after activated carbon, the water can still contain microbes and pathogens (bacteria, viruses, protozoa), nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus), salts & metals (not removed from carbon such as nitrates, heavy metals) and residual organic matter - so further purification is necessary before the water is safe for humans to drink.
💧To make the water directly drinkable🥤 would require membranes, advanced oxidation, disinfection and remineralisation; basically turning the plant into a potable reuse system, similar to what's being pioneered in 🇨🇳Singapore (NEWater) and 🇺🇸California.
▶️🇰🇪KENYA - WHERE ARE WE NOW?
💧The Nairobi Rivers Commission @nairobi_rivers @kiolijohn and the Water Resources Authority are actively working on "clean-up" efforts and restoration orders, reflecting concern at governmental level. Rivers in and around Nairobi (particularly Nairobi River and its tributaries, Mathare, Ngong, etc) are heavily polluted. They receive industrial effluent, sewage, solid waste and run off.
💧Publicly documented municipal plants in Kenya primarily use waste-stabilisation ponds and not conventional biological treatment, not Swiss style advanced micro pollutant removal.
💧Nairobi's Dandora/Ruai system for example relies on large pond series and current expansions add more points, not ozonation/activated carbon (4th stages). (Kenya does use activated carbon in some drinking water treatment and private systems however that's different from wastewater micopollutant removal).
🪩Clean rivers mean 🚻healthier people, 🐟🦒🦩thriving wildlife, stronger communities. For Kenya adopting Water Safety Plans (WSPs), Fecal-Sludge Treatment Plans (FSTPs) and Catchment Management Plans helps to save the future of its rivers and its not just about water, its about life, livelihoods and legacy.

📅 On 17 Sept, Teresa de la Torre (@sorigue_) presented the #LifeBIODAPH2O project at the Mid-term #NEWater project Workshop 🌱 hosted by @ICRA_CERCA.
💡 A valuable opportunity to showcase the project and share knowledge on #NatureBasedSolutions with a specialized audience.

@goldencrab @theoscarhoole For a long time, Singapore bought raw water from Malaysia, treated it, and sold it back to Malaysia.
A small amt was collected in its reservoirs.
Non-potable water was used for industries to reduce freshwater demand. Today, there's also #NEWater.

@primeimages @CollinSLKoh Not portable but tap water. Used to be 100% dependent, now, no longer 100%. Singapore geniuses knew they had to have their own source of water. Enter #NEWater. https://t.co/3Wd1hdEGST

#NEWATER

シェアオフィスで配ってた。暑い時期に水よりはいいかな。この店舗、喋っていいエリアとそうじゃないエリアが分かれていないんだろうか。全体的にざわざわ。

The #NEWater facility by @PUBsingapore in Singapore.
This is a #water reclamation facility where "used-water" (we call it sewage) is converted to drinkable water.
Societal acceptance for this water is very high thanks to sustained trust, education & communication over 20 years
Last week for @thinkbanklive I had spoken about some of the water management policies & practices in #Singapore which allows the city state to secure her water.
