The Need for Sneed
In a @SolutioApp thread recently, discussing possible synergies with the #Sneed SNS DAO, I promised @fairtal3 to type down my view of why there is a fundamental #NeedForSneed on the #InternetComputer.
https://t.co/HyymDFL0bm
Something that really excites me about the Internet Computer is that it offers a platform for building everything on-chain, including a new kind of self-funding, permanent Internet infrastructure.
Smart contracts launched on the blockchain can live forever, and with the reverse gas model, there are many ways to keep them funded. User donations, ads, micropayments (where callers do pay for the gas after all, this model is also possible on the IC) are all ways in which this new, self-funding Internet infrastructure could start to grow.
The IC architecture allows smart contracts to build on each other, such that one contract can call another contract deployed by a different, independent developer. This is not different from other blockchains, the difference is the scale and cost efficiency with which the IC allows this.
The IC scales up as well as down. This means that not only can you deploy incredibly advanced contracts - including, as recently demonstrated by @dominic_w, AI running fully on-chain!
https://t.co/oFr6KKuhxd
It also becomes economically feasible to deploy “small contracts” where each contract performs only some relatively simple function and does it well. These functions can then be composed together in powerful ways – much like Unix systems.
These contracts are not constrained to DeFi features. On the IC anything and everything goes on-chain, from AI to social media – even memes, as we can see in the new Sneed DAO 100% on-chain meme contest!
https://t.co/4JFofXE7ri
This makes the IC the perfect place to deploy useful infrastructure functions. Path-finding algorithms, indexed look-ups, a simple service that combines two images into one, advanced audio processing – there is simply no limit, high or low, to what can be deployed in a reusable way on the Internet Computer.
Few things might make programmers salivate more than the thought of deploying some useful service that is globally available, funds itself automatically, is hack-proof and scales seamlessly with use, such that it can become a dependency in hundreds of projects and live forever.
It is however important to note that smart contracts on the Internet Computer can be upgraded by the developer at any time. This has benefits and drawbacks.
On the positive side, critical bugs may be fixed, and perhaps exciting new features can be added. On the other hand, it can hamper composability if calling contracts cannot trust that the code in the contract they call will continue to behave as it did when the calling code was written. The IC offers two solutions to this issue.
The first solution to this is called “blackholing”. This term means that all the “controllers” for a contract (the accounts with permission to upgrade the contract) are removed so the contract can never again be modified by anyone. The drawback, of course, is that even catastrophic bugs cannot be fixed (and no cool new features can be added).
The second solution is to make a DAO the controller of the contract. Members of the DAO are then able to vet all upgrades to the smart contract by voting on them. Thus we can get the best of both worlds in that bugs can be fixed and features added, but other code with dependencies on the contract can rely on the DAO process to be able to clearly see (and if they are DAO members, vote on) all changes to the code they depend on.
Of course, not only other code can benefit from the transparency and the vetting process offered by a DAO. Users of an application on the IC benefit in the same way from the application being controlled by a DAO, with the increased safety that comes from knowing everyone will be able to see all code changes to the application, and that the developer can not change the application without a majority of DAO members agreeing to the change.
It could be argued that all code that wants to be trusted for anything significant by users and other code building on it, should be either blackholed or controlled by a DAO.
It was with all this in mind that I became so excited when #Dfinity launched #SNS1, the first of its kind SNS DAO. The special thing about SNS-1, except for it being the first SNS, was that it had a “blank canvas” mission. This meant that it would be up to the community of DAO members to decide what to do with it.
To me, this was the missing piece for the IC puzzle, perfect for providing reusable SNS infrastructure.
The model was simple. Any project that could benefit from DAO governance but didn’t have the scope or size to motivate creating its own SNS DAO could simply hand over control to the SNS-1 DAO. Furthermore, if the developer owned some SNS-1, and the contract they handed over control for brought positive attention – or even revenue – to the DAO, they would benefit from any positive price action – voila, a way to monetize your open source software!
I consequently started accumulating SNS-1, with a view to do three things: 1) follow the model outlined above where I hoped to be able to hand over any interesting projects I came up with to the SNS-1 DAO, and if any of them should turn out profitable I would have part in that profit via my SNS-1 ownership, 2) potentially benefit from other web3 developers following the same model, and 3) I looked forward to being able to vote on the development of interesting and maybe even important new Internet infrastructure, that would find a natural place to be governed in the blank canvas SNS-1 DAO.
I was not alone in this general perspective. While many saw SNS-1 as just a joke, a test token or at best a meme (but what was the meme?) others saw the same potential I did.
A tagger bot had its controller handed over to the DAO, and at that time the growing project that became #ICPCoins, now under the control of the #Neutrinite SNS, was considering letting SNS-1 be the DAO to control it.
But as this snowball was starting to grow, destiny had other plans. The creators of Neopets bought up a controlling interest in SNS-1 to use it for governance of their upcoming web3 game @dragginzgame.
While this was without a doubt the most exciting thing ever to have happened to one of my investments, it also meant that it was over for SNS-1 as the “blank canvas” DAO as a home to a multitude of projects.
Enter Sneed. The Sneed SNS DAO was launched by early SNS-1 community members to continue the “blank canvas” mission of SNS-1 (the word “Sneed” was used as slang for SNS-1 by early holders). As SNS-1 turned into DKP, there was a need for Sneed.
The “Blank canvas” mission means the Sneed DAO is not constrained to any particular domain, any and all projects that could benefit from DAO governance are welcome to create a proposal to hand control over their canisters to the Sneed DAO. It could be infrastructure services, applications, tokens, memes, art, anything where you think your users could gain confidence in your project if it were governed by an SNS DAO.
Sneed follows the popular, strictly deflationary SNS-1 tokenomics with a low max supply of 10,000 tokens. It also aims to solve some of the issues with this model, such as the lack of minted voter rewards. The Sneed founding team is currently engaged in writing infrastructure to support SNS DAO governance, in order to further improve the value for developers in assigning their application and service governance to the DAO. The Sneed community is engaged in discussions around how to create valuable applications. The community is cooking. The snowball is growing again.
The most recent proposal, #53, offers to hand control of an ICRC1 token called $MIF (#MotokoWifHat) to the Sneed DAO, as a superior option to blackholing its contract. This benefits MIF users as it protects them from bugs being unfixable, as well as from unexpected changes to the token contract. The proposal also offers to hand control of the LP to the Sneed DAO, to protect users from rugging.

This proposal clearly demonstrates the idea, the model, and the synergies that can be found between projects that can benefit from SNS governance, and a “blank canvas” community that provides credibility and stability to such governance (there's also a MIF airdrop to Sneed stakers, check proposal #52).
In summary, the value of a DAO comes from its members and the stewardship they perform. The Sneed DAO has a great, well distributed and informed community, with many members that have been active on the IC from the start. Governance via voting and vetting is a valuable service that many projects could benefit from, and Sneed DAO is there for them.
TL;DR: Sneed DAO is a community for builders, innovators and creatives on the IC that want to benefit from SNS DAO infrastructure and governance of their projects, and are looking to build together with other like-minded enthusiasts.
Sure! We have a community driven "blank canvas" DAO, modeled after the original SNS-1 DAO, where the founding team is focusing on building DAO infrastructure to enable the community to innovate.
Actually it is hard to sum up, I'll come back with a longer form post 😀 But in the meantime, do check out @icsneed , and maybe join the discord for where most of the developer talk is happening.
