Here's a bypass I did this weekend for a customer on a 3-5 revision AES

There’s still the question of which capacitor technology to use and here too, the details matter. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, the originals fitted in the console, rely on a liquid electrolyte that inexorably dries out over time: their capacitance drifts, their internal resistance climbs, and after two or three decades they become the weak link in any video circuit.
This is precisely the kind of aging we see in period AES consoles. Tantalum capacitors operate on a different principle, using a solid electrolyte: no liquid, so no drying out, no leakage, no drift capacitance that stays stable over decades and across the full temperature range. Their lower equivalent series resistance and healthier frequency behavior also make them better suited to video signals, and their compact size allows a complete conditioning stage to fit on a module just a few square centimeters in area.
This technology does come with one requirement in return: tantalum tolerates neither overvoltage nor reverse polarity, and must therefore be sized with a comfortable voltage margin above what the circuit will actually see a standard engineering rule that the NeoPass follows in its component selection. Ultimately, the equation is straightforward: where a bypass relying on the original electrolytics inherits end-of-life components, a module with fresh tantalum coupling delivers conditioning that won’t change the image installed today will be the same in twenty years.
This is exactly what the NeoPass module does, integrating all of this conditioning onto a compact board, fitted without destructive modification and entirely reversible. And since each motherboard revision presents different and often incorrect output levels, the module is available in dedicated versions whose component values are calibrated to bring each revision back to the precise levels the standard requires. Where DIY bypasses approximated levels and sync based on whatever components were available, the NeoPass applies the standard no more, no less.
And that is precisely why the result is spectacular: we’re not asking the Neo Geo to do better than it knows how; we’re simply stopping it from being prevented from doing so.
